I was advised that the right rear wheel bearing required adjustment at the annual road worthiness inspection (MOT in the UK). The bearing had a little play when bought as a turnkey car from Chesil in 2004. Mileage is now 10,000.

As they are not adjustable I stripped the rear bearings & found them in good order. To be on the safe side I replaced the outer roller bearing. I reassembled everything carefully making sure the chamfers were correctly placed for the inner & outer spacers. Torque on the axle nut was set at 253 ft/lbs, & 43 ft/lbs on the outer bearing cover fixings

The result is exactly the same play once reassembled.

What is going wrong? I wonder whether the internal spacer sleeve is too long & would benefit from some easing with emery cloth?

Any other suggestions?
