Hi all,

Had some nice recent local cruises in the last few weeks.
First of all did a drive last Fri AM from home (SD airport area) to work in Carlsbad (30+) miles to try out the new tri mill exhaust system that Ricardo reccomended and it worked great, much queter than the howling Monza 4tip exhaust it came with. The PM bumper to bumper traffic back home was even fun.

I am still undecided if I want a freeway flyer, I might hate that flat spot between 3rd and 4th gears. That was illustrated on the next Mon drive to work and then to a smog shop in Santee (Dooleys) the shop owner laughed and said to tell DMV to pound sand and register it as a 69 bug because that what it is and it is smog exempt. He is also a smog tech so will take his advice to hang tough with DMV. I will go back to DMV later, I have until August anyway. The ride home from Santee took me on a sweet 2 lane hilly road (Mission Gorge Road) and has me rethinking the FF trans. Might be better on the mountain roads with the stock trans.

But I jumped ahead of myself. On Sunday Chrissa and I took the top down, found our hats, sunscreen and jumped onto HWY 5 south a few miles and drove over the Coronado Bridge. We then cruised past the Hotel Del and down the Silver Strand into Imperial Beach which has become really nice since the last time I was there. (Check out HBO's "John from Cincinnati"

Then back on HWY 5 north and into Nationl City where there is a great VW parts store Vee Parts http://www.veeparts.com/This is a very cool parts store, they know their stuff and are even open on Sunday!
Well hope I haven't bored you all but I am getting much more confident in my "D" and am gearing up for some longer road trips in a few months.

Hope everyone can get out for a little cruise this weekend.

Cheers
Dave

Hey Dave

My names Kevin and I also have what I think is an earlier Intermechanica Speedster. I drive it every time I get a chance (almost every day) This has been one of the best cars I've ever owned (in the over 70 cars I've had in the past 19 years) Lets hook up for a cruise or two. Call me at 619-490-9180

PS: I build custom cars for a living ;)
Will, Larry and Kevin,

Do you set off alarms when you drive in the neighbor hoods? That makes me smile when I hear the chirps and oversensitive car alarms. Some of the dogs bark too but they are getting used to me in my hood.

OK, looks like there are San Diego/North County Speedsters owners who need to have a local cars and coffee. everyone chime in. Maybe cruise the beach or old 101 (wherever, Del Mar, La Jolla, PB, Ponto etc.)I work in Carlsbad and live just above the airport in Mission Hills.

There is a really good breakfast place called Cafe on Park IMO best breakfast in San Diego. Opens at 8am Thats my recommendation for Downtown area breakfast spots. What are your fav spots in your area.

Larry, I have been to VW Paradise several times and they are great. Picked up my master cyl brake light switch from them. I tried an exhaust system also but it did not fit and had to return it. No hassle and they will get my return business.

Cheers

Hey, guys I agree we need to start a little cruising and having fun with these "Tubs".... I've been racing with the Porsche club down at the Stadium for over 15 years. I've driven my Tub down there and hung out with them, they also have alot of cruises that I'm sure we can go along with. There is also a lot of VW guys here in San Diego and they like to build cruises with all VW based cars "no exception".

Let's start planning our first outing and we can deside if we want to get something going from there.
Hey how about calling our little group DTC (Der Tub Club) you know TDC (top dead center). Just a thought

Ok guys I'm looking into hooking our first cruise up with another club or group of cars. As soon as I have something set up I'll get on the phone and here and bring you guys up to speed. Speeking of speed here is a couple of pictures of my pressent "P" cars.

Thank you Dave

I'm very fortunate that I can build what ever I want. Wait till you guys see my latest project....

Also if any of you guys have a question I pretty sure I'll have the answer. Also for any of you Big HP guys, I'm completing the install of a 2000hp in ground chassis dyno. I'll be hosting some dyno sessions in the future.....
Sooo Kevin!...YOU'RE the guy with drag videos on The Samba with that awesome Bus!! You were running against all types of cars without even thinking about it! V-8 and all!! Our fellow member Cory has a soft spot for you in his heart as we were talking about those videos here some time ago and he was really supportive of your "cojones" saying: "you go little buddy..." Uber cool!!

And Fred; that looks like a very nice one; I suppose it's a VS?
Ricardo and Cory, Thanks guys. That old bus was one hell of a ride. IF you guys liked that one your realy gonna like the one I'm building now. It will have a 2332 turbo EFI engine putting out about 100 more hp. It's getting a surf theme and a boat load of one off things. I intend to go to the big car shows and take out some of the top cars with it.

Dave, My little 356 has got a 2180 right now but I have plans to upgrade to either a larger cc with a turbo and fuel injection or a 911 engine and trans. At the same time I'm working on a full A-arm front end to help the handling out.

Your speedster is looking quite nice also. What do you have in the little tub?

Cory you've got a nice looking racer.

here's a link to one of the videos of that bus before I added the Nitrous. By the end of the night lets say I changed the opion of a lot of bus haters.
Hi Kevin,

I have a 1776 w/dual kadron's. It has a stock transaxle 4:11 so it goes ok but nothing like your's must.

Just readjusted my valves in prep for the Dana Pt run next week. I don't mind parking and walking to the P concourse my fibertub will be outclassed in so many ways, but I do want to see the real deals in one place. Still need to come up with the best day to group up with SOC's in SD and OC.

My third car was a 58' bus with safari front windows and a camper interior + 36hp and I loved it (aprox 1968). Many Baja surf trips in that bus.
That was where I learned to R&R an air cooled engine. My skills have atrophied since then but I am enjoying relearning them.

Cheers

Hey thanks guys..... I just can't seam to keep any of my cars. It seams by the time I finish one I'm already thinking about the next build. I guess the easiest way to say it is that some of us are car owners and some of us are car builders. I love the feeling when I finish a car pull it out and people realy like my vission. It is truley addicting.

I humbly say thank you all very much for your compliments.

Alan Merklin, aka Merklin the Magician, aka Dr. Clock, has a habit of buying old kit cars (particularly Speedsters), working his magic on them, and selling them for a bunch more than he paid for them. He most recently did this to the one about which he'd said "this one's a keeper". He's just bought a used Vintage and says it's gonna be his car. Needless to say, we're giving him plenty of grief ;-).

He's also built a number of CMCs into gorgeous cars, disproving the saying that "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

He posts here as "drclock".
