@Gary P , as Robert says, Anthony is the man to see hereabouts. He's been keeping my Speedster alive for almost a decade now.

If both tail lights went out at once, the problem is probably not bulbs or bulb sockets, and if your brake lights still work, it's probably not the ground, either.

And, if your front running lights are good, it's probably not the switch.

So, not much else it could be except the wire connecting the switch to the lights. Likely a corroded or loose connection at one end or the other.

You should be able to access the back of the tail light from the engine compartment. The driver's side light housing is where the wire from the switch connects to the tail lights. You'll probably see connectors there for the various lights (brake, tail, turn signal) and it's just a question of figuring out which is which. I'm betting cleaning up those connections will fix it.

Yeah - The tail lights connect to the switch, too.  Look around for another wire near the switch that isn't connected to anything.  That might be what you're looking for, then there should be a tab on the switch to connect it to.  Without seeing your switch we can't tell what kind of terminals it has and whether or not the tail light wire is screwed on there or some other way to connect them.  If it's a screw on, the screw might be missing on the switch, too.
