Is anyone currently running with one of those red urethane steering couplers in their Speedsters who hasn't died or nearly died in a crash due to the coupler failing and causing a catastrophic loss of control?

There's a LOT of chatter on the various forums citing failure after near failure due to these cracking apart under every day use. I have one here, new in package, that I like to use in building up this front beam assembly, but I don't want to include a potentially unsafe piece in such a crucial area of control.

Any thoughts? Anyone safely using one? Anyone safely used on in the past? Anyone had one break, deteriorate while in use? Any info at all would help. I seen pics and heard tales on the web, but I don't really know what the situation was that lead to the coupler failing.

Thanks !

I heard enough horror stories about them that when I was at the Litchfield show I specifically asked Jack at the Bug Stop for a rag version. He told me that "Everyone is buying the Urethane ones." I then told him about them being brittle and falling apart and that I wouldn't buy one, so he went in the truck and pulled out a NOS (real) German VW one - at twice the price.

Urethane version = $12.00

NOS VW version = $22.50

Piece of mind when driving around? = Priceless!!
One split on my Spyder after about 30,000 kms, no real abuse, just got real sloppy one day, I pulled the gas tank and the coupler was split across the middle with just 1 ear still working....not good, could kill you...I am using a genuine German VW pieces hence forth, same with motor mounts. The red urethane is worthless for motor mounts and couplers...
