Mike:

I just purchased by car in December of 05'. I got it registed with no problem at all. I registed it as the original year of the VW Pan and had zero problems.

Inspection was not a problem either as it did not have to go through emissions, but probably would have passed that one as well I hope.

Ricardo:

I thought the requirements for cars back then were more lenient? I know that it would not meet the standards for cars built today. Like I said since it is an old car it does not need to pass emissions. I guess that is a good thing !

Thanks for the insight ! I know that you are one of the experts on the website so your opinion is appreciated.

Thanks !

Mike,

I registered my VS as a 67 VW with Vin. No emissions test needed. You will have to do your standard yearly inspection. It's nothing more than a 5 min. visual check to get your window sticker.

The only thing that I regreted doing was registering the car at NYC during my lunch break. It was nothing more than an exercise in patient and tolerance for some of the @^#$*&$^ people working there.

If you are looking to get a vanity plate, check out the NYS web site. You can see what it will look like first. 8 characters maximum.

Good Luck - M

C'mon Andres...don't call me an expert; I just love to share what I've learned about these cars (VW's specifically) over the years and I learn a lot from everyone here too, so that's a plus! Would you guys believe that in here to renew your registration every year they analyze the car's exhaust no matter what year the car is? Would you believe they can be THAT stupid?....At least in the mainland you get exemptions; over here they're so much in the dark that they don't know what the f*** they're doing and couldn't care less plus they don't know what common sense is....it's unreal!
I would think unless you have the title for the Chassis with its matching VIN you'd have little chance getting it retitled. Assume the 1983 is the build year. If needing chassis title is true then you could put it on another chassis with good VW title (I like to keep the other VIN plates too - such as the one riveted in the windshield area on '68up and the one riveted in the front trunk. Guess you could also move those plates to your current chassis and weld in VIN plate in back --- but it might cause other problems if they look at the welding on the chassis. I've always found it difficult to deal with DMV - they don't seem to use logic. Ha, VA and FL have distinction of granting nearly all of the Driver Licenses used as Id's by the 9/11 terrorist to board the planes!
Bruce,

I lived in NJ for a couple of years, but without the Speedy. A quick look at the NJS and NYS DMV site indicates exemption for vehicles 25 years or older. I don't think you'll want to wait till 2008 to get her on the road.

I'm assuming you'll want to retitle her for NJS. Under New Vehicle Titles - Special Vehicles - Reconstructed Vehicles - Kit Cars fell under that category.

Did CMC keep the VIN number from the donor pan? If you are still working on the vehicle, would part of an older pan - pre 79 - be accessable for your use? I'm sure others on this site would be able to provide you with usefull suggestions.

Best of luck - M

Mike:

I'm in New York and did not have any problem with the registration, or inspection. If you are on Long Island, I have a guy familiar with these vehicles that can handle the inspection - my only problem was that the title I received from Kirk did not have my proper name.

Mel: I also registered mine in NYC on my lunchbreak, very frustrating, but all form over substance - they could not care what you were registering as long as the paperwork looked right (and I did stretch things pretty far).

Bill: Nice car! I can't wait for it to finally warm up around here. I've been itchin to go for a spin into the city. Maybe round up a few locals for a speedster run thru NYC. What am I saying...I'm forgetting about those SUV size pot holes.

Andres: I like your Speedy too! Would you drive into the city?

A local run would be nice though!
Mel:

Frankly I've been afraid to take the vehicle off the island - but I am toying with the idea of taking it to Carlisle this spring - It woundn't be a bad idea to take a test ride over a couple of bridges -

Mike: I misread your initial post, I thought you had taken the plunge, if you do, you won't regret it. Good luck.
