Planning on registering and transferring the title of my IM this week from Mich to Florida. Noticed last week when I switched the registration and title of my Range Rover, that Florida asks to see/inspect the vehicle---though the person completing my registration never bothered to go outside and take a look. I think it all depends on who is handling the transaction. Hopeful that I can get "antique" Fla plate for the IM....If anyone has information on this, please let me know. Thanks.

Doesn't it boil down to the fact that most Speedsters are VW pan based with an existing VW title (and perhaps a Certificate of Origin) where a Spyder and tube frame Speedsters don't have such a title?  I've registered 5 vehicle in FL and on each one the tax office (there is no DMV) physically checks the VIN and Odo reading. None of mine have been kit cars/replicas and all were previously in my name in another state --- so no sales tax to be computed/collected.  I'd think a Bill of Sale would be required to establish value or a folder of receipts if home built.

In FL getting an initial license plate is $225 (ends up near $400 to get out the door) or just $75 (+ other fees) for an antique car over 30 years old. No safety or emission inspections at all in FL.  The Sheriffs don't seem to pull drivers over for burned out lights, bald tires, cracked windshields, too dark tinting, lifted trucks, etc. but drive with a clear plastic cover over the plate and they'll stop you for sure.

Gary - The wording on the FL form is really confusing.  I know Cory in MD has his CMC (but now tube chassis) Speedster registered as a Street Rod - in FL, it has to of been build on a 1949 or older car.  The Custom Build is for after 1948 and 25 years old "or has a body constructed from non-original materials." So guess Spyder fits the "or" requirement BUT both say "The vehicle will only be used for exhibition and not for general transportation." I would think driving it along the beach drive isn't what they have in mind for exhibition - I'm sure that's more for driving to car show and home.

BTW, I called a rep at DMV regarding the "process" and they were helpful (very surprised) and sent me a checklist of what had to be done.  I have to register my Beck (in NY) as a 2013 Custom, that is the only way I can pass inspection. Otherwise it would need emission equipment, windshield washer, airbags etc.  I also have to have it inspected with all documentation, have it weighed, then wait for approval then get it licensed and inspected. Again this is for NY, but some of this info may be helpful. Bottom line, with a pan it is simple, with a tube based, they are concerned that it is stolen.

My car is a newer IM which, like Beck, is not VW pan based. In Florida IM is easy to register and Beck should be also.  I would suggest you call the DMV local offices in the county where you will be registering the car.  In our county that is through the County Tax Collector.  You can call and get answers over the phone or go in with our without an appointment and get the facts.  Not hard and you would be talking to the folks who do it in the location where you want to register it.

Re:New Car Registration Florida .... very easy

All I did was take the paper work including the invoice provided by Special Edition, filled out the form I down-loaded from the Florida DMV, took them to a local DMV office, paid my sales tax and then decided what kind of plates I wanted .... Antique, Florida Regular or Specialty.  Shortly thereafter I received my permanent title in the mail for my ....  1957 Beck Speedster.

Next year I'm moving to Colorado, I hope to have as easy a time with the Colorado DMV

Did you have them registwr the car first in Indiana so it had a title?

In SC the Statement of Origin was the only necessary paperwork.  The DMV guy had to come out and see the chassis number on the car before issuing me a title.  I now own (as fas as the state of SC is concerned) as 1957 Becs.  Why is it spelled that way, you may ask?  I pointed out the misspelling to them and they said "There's already one in the system like that and we don't want to go through the hassle of entering a new brand name."  Given how many weeks it took to get to that point I accepted what measure of success I could get and took my shiny new license plate.

Hi Todd  .... Sorry, no recordings that accurately reflect the sound of the engine.  Note that I has fortunate enough to have Jake Raby build my engine and he indicates to have a magic formula to transform the sound into more Porsche like.  To me, my sounds great .... more than one knowledgeable person has shown real surprise when I told him it was a water cooled Suby and not an old Porsche engine.
