Registration in California (out of town replica)

Hi gang, I am new to this and looking for a good reliable replica. Found one out of state that is titled as a 1992 VW. I was wondering if I try to register this in California will I have to meet 1992 VW smog conditions? I believe the replica was built in 92 but has a basic VW pan and a beefed up VW engine.
