When I registered my completed CMC Speedster 21 years ago in New Jersey, I did it as a "Reconstructed Vehicle". This entails regular two-year state inspection. Last time I was inspected the inspector suggested that I register it as a "Collector's Car" which limits the mileage you can drive but exempts you from inspection. What have others in New Jersey done?
At the time of registration my insurance agent took the car on as a 1966 Beetle, based on the donor car. Again, how have others in NJ handled their insurance?

Once you get your NJ title you may want to register your kit as a "CLASSIC". Obtain form # "SS-66 (R5/99) APPLICATION FOR COLLECTOR VEHICLE STATUS" at your local DMV office. To get collector status, you will need proof of classic insurance, your policy or letter from your insurance company will do. Fill out the form, prove you have collector insurance, & Pay an extra $25 (1st time only) plus your registration fee. The advantage to this is that you do not need to worry about emissions check, dyno or tail pipe. Some inspection stations have been known to check for smog equipment, charcoal canisters, etc. Inspections must be done at NJ State (Parsons) Inspection Station, not a private garage. Typically the only thing that is checked at inspection is to insure that your odometer is working! Inspector records your odometer and tells you to drive around the block. It is then rechecked on your return to see if it has moved. No safety, no emissions, etc. But, that can depend on the station you go to and who is conducting the inspection. I have had lights, signals and seat belts checked. You should go to the end of the line for inspection. If you have a problem ask for a supervisor. When you get your sticker it will be triangle shaped and you have a two year inspection cycle after that

I live in NJ and have a '59 CMC speedster replica from CMC. It is on a '73 Beetle pan. I have been insured with American Collector Insurance (cherry Hill, NJ) for the last 15 years. I had no problem registering my car as a '73 Beetle. American Collector knows however what it is - they required 4 photos. They have always been the most reasonable, with no deductable, and an agreed upon value for replacing the car. I have owned everything from a '66 Vette to a '31 Model A Ford to a '57 Bel Air. Hope this helps!

I sent away to Trenton for the "Special Plate Unit". Any DMV can give you the phone number. It may even be online. That unit sends you the forms, you mail 'em in, and soon you have your reg & QQ plates. Custom plates take 6 weeks . . . but if you don't care what the QQ plates say, you'll get them in 10 days. Immediately if you go to the DMV in Trenton and go to the Special Plate Unit.

As for a mileage restriction, they ask you to report your mileage each anniversary date, and it's on the honor system. So . . . if you sent your engine out for repair, overhaul, etc, and the odometer reset . . . OH WELL!
