Joe:
On IRS rear bearing replacement:
I had to take the trailing arm/bearing assembly to a machine shop and carefully press out the bearings with a hydraulic arbor press - they're a PITA as they have bushings, spacers and bearings to contend with and then you have to have a selection of spacers available to get the correct thrust tolerance. On top of that, VW apparently has special adapters for their presses to make getting it all apart and re-assembled easier. We didn't have those, either, so I did one side and it was enough of a PITA that I gave BOTH of them to an old VW guy who knew what he was doing with them and they came back all fixed.

Which direction did they press them out? Out of my outer board bearing s came out with just a slight tug. The others are a PITA. It loosk like the inboard seals were welded in place . To much grease to get an actual look. I want to remove everything by tommorrow since its off the the sandblaster friday. The Haynes book I pickup up tonight is no big help. Though it does state to take them off and have it done.
Joe, personally I wouldn't do that. You have no guarantee as to the quality of their work. Remember at 65 miles an hour,,,,your life and the lives of anyone who rides with you are at risk even with the best mechanic who might leave out an o-ring. Let alone a guy who doesn't know or give a rats ass if he ever sees you again....after all he's got your money, and your out of sight.

Pick a VW or porsche machanic who has a known reputation. Pay him fair money for good work, and be safe..
