When we work on the 911's we pull the engine and transmission together as there's not really room to do anything else. Whatever the vehicle, if we want both out, we pull them both together. We yarded the drivetrain out of the little black speedstah today. Neither of us have worked on VW's and hadn't looked into exactly how to do the drivetrain pull before we started. I mean, hey, they aren't terribly complicated. It's like any other car, if on idea doesn't work, another one will.

We wanted both engine and trans out for a re-fresh as the car is a pig-in-a-poke and we don't want any future surprises. We got both out together, with all the tin and carb on the engine - no issues. But looking at it after we had it on the ground I couldn't help but wonder...

Were we supposed to pull them seperately (engine, then transaxle)?

Actually we have that "Volkswagen for idiots book" somewhere in storage. Guess we should dig that out.

Just for the record, they come out together with a standard floor jack. It's much easier/safer to pop the stub shafts off the transaxle so that you can drop it down between the frame horns.

Next step is to build the rotisserie.

I seldom dropped a swing-axle tranny/engine together - just too much of a pita.

IRS, now that's a different story. Pull the axles, release the shift coupler, clutch and throttle cables, electric wires and heater wires, then remove the nose cone nuts, pull the tranny lower bolts and the whole shebang comes right out. Just about as fast as dropping the engine alone.
