Hello friends, I did a search but didn't find the info I was looking for.

I picked up a screw in the sidewall of a back tire and am ordering a tire for replacement. I thought I had read somewhere that tire shops had difficulty balancing a tire on a wide 5 wheel and that an adaptor is often needed. Is this correct and does someone have a source?

I searched on Google and saw a number of adaptors but I thought I'd check in here with the experts first before buying anything. Do I need this and if so, do I also need another set of nuts and bolts to connect it? Does anyone have a good source for these parts?

Thanks!

Yes, your tire shop will need an adaptor to spin balance the new tire.  Ask the tire shop if they have one in order to spin balance the new tire.  If they don't know what you are talking about, find another tire shop.

Some guys buy the adaptor for themselves so they can loan it to the tire shop for their tires.  But, you should be able to find a tire shop with one.

And, just because they have the adaptor doesn't mean they know what they're doing.  I remember the time I was having Bridgestone Potenzas mounted at a Firestone store.  They were taking forever to balance the tires and I finally stuck my nose into it.  Well, they had the adaptor but were having a heck-of-a-time trying to balance with the only two lugs (out of 5) they could find.

After speaking to the manager, we agreed that Firestone would pay another tire shop that knew how to balance wide-5s for me to go to.  Still, had I not stuck my nose in it I think they were at about the point of giving up and I was going to get the spyder back with new, expensive, unbalanced tires.

There's this one (no I don't know about shipping from Europe) :

This one(Europe too) : https://www.buttysbits.com/?pr...alance-machine-plate

CSP also sells one, but it's about 100 Euros.

A lot of guys buy these wheel adapters(they come in pairs) and either sell the other or gift it:

I have a Mainely by Design, but sadly they aren't around any more.

Wow, that one is pricy too!

I think somebody with a CNC lathe and mill setup should make these. Half-inch thick plate aluminum, a circle drill jig and a 12 x 1.5mm tap. Easy-peasy.

On second thought, you could water-jet cut the whole thing, then tap the holes. BAM!

Somebody with a flatbed laser could blow those out in batches of 100 in an hour or less. Tap the holes on a mill and you're done before lunch.

Go for it Danny. you don't need 1/2" either.......jump on it Dude....easy $$$$ for a retired guy, eh ? How much for the setup..? ....how many can you sell at about $10 profit each. You could probably make more money as a wire splicer on the side.

Thanks, David, but I'm good. I've got a hobby business in my retirement. I help selected people with engine, transaxle, and motor work.

In my initial post, I said "somebody with" so that would be not me, and someone already set up.
