Quick question. I am taking the alternator out of my 1600 cc CMC replica and have run into a snag. I have everything loosened, or so I thought, but the alternator still won't come out. Do I need to loosen/remove the large bolt from the rear of the alternator? If so does anyone know what size bolt this is? Nothing I have fits.
Thanks so much,
Al

well - 36mm is the fan bolt. - there are only 4 bolts holding the alt / gen in place. the 4 backing plate bolts and the one clamp on the gen/alt stand.

you will need to gently lift the fan shroud to get the alt assembly (with fan) out.

use an impact gun to zap off the fan - keep the washers. should be a done deal in 2 hrs if you have th new parts, tools and working conditions (ie not outside)
Look at the diameter of the alternator mounting plate (the plate that mounts to your fan shroud via (4) 6mm bolts. It's just a little greater that the diameter of the fan which is also attached.

Loosen the 2 screw/bolts located on the extreme outside edges of the narrow portion of the fan shroud (they are on the shroud by the intake manifolds Look at the area's where the fan shroud meets the upper tin as some builders insert screws to keep the metal as air tight as possible.

Once all the screws are removed, gently lift up on the shroud. If you have an internal oil cooler, it's locatd above the #3 and 4 cylinders so basically, all you do is lift up on the shroud and pull the alternator towards the rear of the car to remove it.
Do you have the stock thermostat set-up installed on the engine? You will have to remove that as well if it's there.

You can get the shroud up high enough without pulling the thermostat, but the bellows sometimes suffers when you do.

There's also a lower mounting nut for the oil cooler bracket, this will hang up on the bottom lip of the shroud going up and down, especially going down when you trying to tuck the bottom lip of the shroud into the upper edge of the tin. Just something to be aware of.

Oh, and don't forget to loosen the throttle cable at the linkage. It passes through the shroud as well. The guide tube can come out of the rubber grommet in the front tin and can be tricky to get it back where it belongs since it's above the transaxle and the clutch cable bracket and adjusting nut want to hurt you while you're under there. I swear, I've seen them both lung at my hand . . .

OR . . . you may luck out and really not need to lift the shroud that much.
