Richard,
The box is only held on the beam by two bolts, which should both have bent over (Forget the technical term) washers on them to prevent the bolts from loosening. You'll need to bend back the washers before tackling the bolts. A pin on the beam gives a positive location for the box itself when refitted.
The drop arm on the box connects to the two tie tods and will need to be reused on the new box. The drop-arm is held on the steering box by a pinch bolt. Not sure if you'll need to remove the two tie rods from the drop arm or not - Best thing to do is to consult a beetle workshop manual.
In my experience stripping my donor car, the hardest thing to get off is the steering column flange on the steering box side of the rubber coupling. Again its held on by a pinch bolt. Use lots of penetrating oil and give it plenty of time to free up. You'll again need to fit it on the new box.
Here's a picture of the box in situ on my car. Of course, my wheel is on the opposite side.....
Hope this helps,
Simon
(If anyone looking at this wonders what on earth the brakelines are doing - they go off to my servo and back)
