Replica build on 356 Registry

Came across this thread of a guy building his plastic classic on the 356 Registry site! Good read.

Sweet! Kinda reminds me of the Hoopty, and that similar silver Speedster with the rear tonneau cover.

Uber kewl. And it is a replicar, the very fine Porsche mill notwithstanding. Amazing what can get done when time, money, and intelect/imagination are boundless. What a sweet motor!! I want those valve covers!!!

Any here using a rear truss bar setup like his??

It looks like a Kafer bar or truss. Several Speedsters here have them.

This looks as good as a centerfold ~

I'm having Henry install a similar truss bar on my IM.

Where would I get this type of set up?

VWparts.net has both kinds. On mine there is a frame piece in the way of where the struts are. Also it would seem my oil cooler/fan would need to be relocated for the shock to shock strut.

Alan, there are several threads on this site about them.

Some require welding on the frame horn and some don't. Choose carefully.

Some also have thinner tubes than others.

I have those valve covers on mine. They are very nicely made. Drilled and tapped for vent lines too. Love 'em, thanks Larry!

In my opinion it's one of the best truss bars on the market, but it does require some welding.

I wonder if I can use tie rods and ends cut to size, I know I have half a dozen of those in the shop...somewhere.

The Bugpack is cheaper but it has 3/4" tubes.

The more expensive ones have 1" tubes.

does it make a difference? I've never used either.

i did some poking and for those of us that know how to weld:

The bending strength increases with the square if the diameter, so the 1" would be a lot stiffer. For me it made a difference.

That's TWICE I've forgotten his name.

Didn't the silver one sell a while back? (And thanks for favorably comparing the Hoopty to that car, Lane. That one is less complicated, even with that modified fan, but much more beautifully executed.)
