Remember, Tom, that 4 1/2" wheels and skinnier tires, while they may be period correct, will let the handling suffer, and part of the joy of these things is to be able to make them corner half decent.
I imagine trying to find skinny 16" tires might be a problem too.
i am cool with wider, just wanted the 16's to fill in the wheel wells a little better.i have a beck, and the upgrade to wide 5 is just a bolt on of carey's parts, but i think he only has the 15's.
There is not a lot of room (width wise)
back there on a Beck. Have you consulted with Carey? I'm sure a simple e-mail to him would get the answers you're after.
Tom-
Totally do-able -- I have 16x4.5" wheels on my 550 Spyder from Alloy Replicas (alloyreplicas.com) -- I have 5.50-16 bias ply style radial tires from Excelsior (sold at Coker) on my car -- and they are awesome. I would highly recommend their wheels. Fibersteel also sells 3.25x16" wheels that are very nice, though not quite as wide.
Message me if you need more help or info -- I'd be happy to help.

Tom,
Any time! Chris Coddington at Alloy Replicas is a wonderful, wonderful guy. He can definitely help you with this. Carey also has all of the details, as he had to endure the pain of building my car!
I also love the Pre-A speedsters and would love to build a replica speedster with 16" wheels. Fibersteel's 16" wheels are a bit cheaper -- you can also try unobtainium -- they had a set of replica wheels for sale in 16" that were superb. Last, there was a fellow from Canada on thesamba.com who was selling nice 16" wheels also (repops).
Best,
Anand
