Alan,
My black Speedster has the single pin kghia front discs and CBperformance rear disks.
I used the CBperformance residual valve on the rears only. The valve screws into the master cylinder port. I'm using a dual stage VW master cylinder from around 1970 vintage.
When I had rear drums, I could keep the rears shoes adjusted so pedal was always at the top.
I had the brake pedal freeplay problem even with the residual valve when I added the rear discs until I finally got everything bled. I kept getting air from The CB rear Calipers. They used a flat washer seal that leaked slightly no matter what I did. Sucking air...
I ended up making fittings (pipe thread with double flared tubing)for the rear calipers to correct the problem. Pedal stays near the top now.
Also, if you're using the Rear Calipers that have the E-brake cables, check for clearance at the caliper near the e-brake return spring. Mine would hit the Frame (near the welded step in the frame where the rear bay is stacked and welded) on suspension compression. I cut the frame extension angle slightly to clear.

Replace the stock master cyclinder, 19.05mm bore, with a Custom Speed & Parts (the German company) master cyclinder #611 015 000, 20.64mm bore and adapter kit #611 017 111. These parts meet stringent German DOT standards and worked well for me. I did a bit of research and this seemed to be the way to go. A little pricey at $300. They have a US distributor in the LA area.

Good Luck, Have Fun

Alan, What type of disks do you have? A really big thing in the GL bettles is to use 944 porsche parts. Its VERY common. I think that if you change to a MK1 Golf/ rabbit MC which has a 20.64mm circuit this will give you more pressure. I am assuming that your brakes travel too far before they start to work. Go to www.vdubengineering.com for more info. Email them and support them, the owner is very nice and helpful.
