Mark (and newbies, too): Carlisle is different things for different people. It is officially the premier Import and Kit Car Show in the US and happens around the third weekend in May. Many speedsters and spyders show up - I think we had 60 or so last year and we are, by far, the largest Kit group to show up (and have been for ten years). Most of the builders show up, too, so you get to talk with them in an informal environment.
The BIG plus, though, is just having the large number of kit cars show up (speedsters and otherwise) which lets you see how other people have done things (sometimes better and sometimes not so) on their cars, giving you ideas about what you can do (and why) when you get to doing something on your car. You also get to speak with the owners and/or builders about how they do things and get lots of questions answered and that, alone, often can save you a lot of time on your build or mods. Some truly amazing and terrific cars show up, as well as a number of "work-in-process" Cars that are not yet finished (like mine.....I don't think it will ever be finished!) and we've even had some unfinished project cars show up on trailers (we're usually all over those) and in 2006 we built Lane's car in two days at the show (and it hasn't fallen apart, yet!)
The Carlisle kit car show is the largest remaining kit car show in the country, and we've had speedster folks come from all over the US and Canada, as well as the UK and Caribbean (maybe this is the year for Ricardo to show up?). Lots of folks have been flying in and then becoming both left and right seaters as the weekend goes on. Many of us have described this Speedster/Spyder gathering as going to the best family reunion you always wished you had - because we all know each other, even though we may not have met face-to-face, and we all share the same passion for these little cars.
"Caravans to Carlisle" are coming from the Southeast (kinda starting in FT. Lauderdale and/or Charleston, SC), Mid-Atlantic (starting in Baltimore), Northeast (starting near Boston for us "speedstah guys), the close Southwest (Starting in Hot Springs Arkansas), and West (one from near Bremen, IN and maybe one other) With the idea that newbies may not feel confident that their car will make it so if they go in a caravan, at least knowledgeable others will be along to help if they have trouble. Last year we swapped out front wheel bearings in the hotel parking lot on a car that limped in (we usually have a lot of tools on hand, just in case and I usually bring half my shop) and the driver (Dave Bash) made it home to Ohio, no further problems.
and we're mostly Aircooled VW nuts, so why not join us? Oh.....and we like BEER, too!
