Does anyone have or know of a source for the retaining clips for the luggage compartment hinges on a '79 VW Superbeetle? I am trying to convert to gas lifts.

I have a 79 Convert also. I would like to find out about your conversion project, as my hood hinges are a pain!

My conversion consists of two gas filled lifts that have a range very close to the actual springs- within 1/2 inch. When I got the hood off to paint, the hinges simple fell off-there was no keeper, so it was being held on by the hood bolts. On spring was compltetly bowed and gnarled. The other was not powerful enough to hold.
It is difficult to find the replacement (crap) springs, so I am on a quest.
The lifts work and will surely support the hood, but I hate to use bale wire to hold them on.

Sorry, guys...they are simple 'c' or 'e' clips that can be purchased at many places...I was misinformed. They are a bitch to install, but that is done. I will post the results of the lift install later...i have altered the holes in the lifts and will put in tomorrow.
