I am not sure which is right or wrong, or if it really matters, but I see a lot of the cars with their rear light assembly positioned at the bottom and some at the top. Last week, while in LA, I found a dealership that is selling a real 356 and the light assembly was on top? I know this has been talked about before, but I have not been able to do a successful search on the topic. Whic is correct? Top or bottom? Did Porsche use them both ways at some point? The car below is the real 356 that I found at a dealership on Santa Monica Blvd, just east of Beverly Hills.

It depends on when the car was built. Early 57's and prior had "shine down" assemblies mounted on top of the license plate. After mid-year 57 the "shine up" assemblies became the standard; these cars had the assembly mounted on the bottom. Along with this change, the tail lights changed as well. The earlier cars had the beehives and the later cars had the teardrop style.
