Hello,i own a Porsche 356 replica manufactured by Classic motor carriages of Miami in 1991.Classic motor carriages ceased trading in 1995 and i'm trying to find out if anybody out there would know how i could find out and authenticate the year of manufacture of my car.I need this information to prove to the authorities where i live in England so that the car can be registered with an age related plate to 1991.The car was given it's vin number at that time in the state of Michigan,i have contacted them and they only keep records for ten years and i brought the car to England three years ago.Do the records from Classic motor carriages exist somewhere?or can someone track records of a car after the time they are kept by the American records in the Michigan state. If there is someone out there who thinks they can help me,i would be most gratefull and would pay you well for your services.

Thank you very much,

Chris,
There should be an MSO plate with an identification number on it,probably mounted in the drivers side door jamb. CMC was taken over by Innovative Street Machines in Miami Florida in the late 90's I believe. They are operating under the buisiness name of "Street Beasts" now. They are producing a Speedster kit that is made from the CMC molds with some modifications now that they have switched to a Tubular Chassis configuration! I would try to contact them,as they may be able to tell you based on the MSO# what year the car was manufactured. Phone # is 888 888 6645 or go to www.streetbeasts.com
I hope that this is helpful to you and that you can get the neccessary information from them.

Chris, there are a few different dates that might help you.
When you bought the car and had it transported, the shipping document might have the year on it someplace. Depending on the good nature of the person you're dealing with, that document might prove helpful.
Second, the date the car was sold to the Michigan resident would be reflected on the paperwork Michigan filed in a filing cabinet somewhere. Back in the early nineties, not very many registrars had computer-based systems. Nearly every form was a carbon-backed onionskin; the owner only got one copy. Your original document DOES live there someplace.
The third date would be the date of manufacture. If a person bought a kit, in pieces, the date of completion might be the date that reflects. If it was a turn-key car (and not many CMCs were), that date would be from a factory assembly process step. FiberFab and Street Beasts are subsequent names for the former Classic Motor Carriages, or CMC, company. Street Beasts, the current incarnation, may be able to locate the original paperwork or re-generate it for you, but I doubt it.
Curt Scott, a kitcar advocate and writer, assisted the Florida State Attorney General's Office in drubbing CMC out of business. An e-mail to him might turn a stone for you also. He does return correspondence.
The CMC build plate and its six-place alphanumeric serial number may or may not help. Mine, from 1984, was actually the registration VIN for a Winnebago camper. It was useless for registration.
I bought my CMC in late '89 - regretfully still in garage. I can make copy of the shipping invoice pages (many computer pages with parts listed --- many noted as BO for back ordered)). It has my name on it - not sure if it has the CMC serial number - but that may not even be on your car. Mine is a classic with black gel coat if it matters. I can scan and email you a page or two to see if it would help.
Yahoo also has a group called Fiberfab where there are a lot of people with knowledge on the history and the ins and outs.

Join this group and you may also get some very useful information. I joined this group when I was first looking for cars.

There's one guy on the FF site that used to be on the CMC dial in tech support team - he apparently has boxes of sales documents from when they closed their doors. He has posted stories of how they made up nmes for themselves and how when it was slow they would call their competitors to harass them just by keeping their phone lines busy. Was hoping he would post production figures for the Speedster, Speedster C and the 959.
