Hi dave

I have already contacted them to ask about buying a roll bar from them, They said that I would be better off getting one made over here, It would be extremely expensive to get a roll bar shipped to the UK.

Hi Gordon

I guess my Pilgrim is very similar to a CMC, so if you would be willing to mail me some measurements, I would be extremely grateful.

Steve
Are you looking for show or it to actually function? I'm sure there is the equivalent of SCCA rules in UK with someone qualified to build one that would comply. Fairly difficult to install on a pan based speedster since it has to be welded/bolted to strong structural pieces. It will stiffen up the body flex on an open car but does cut down on interior space.

Hi Steve
The best person to talk to about a Roll Bar in the UK is Jon Rathbone of VW drag racing fame. He has made a roll bar for Justin Hardy who is building a Speedster and it is a first class job. He can work with CDS or alloy steel depending on how critical you are about weight. His bars are also to MSA/FIA standards,He is not cheep but probaly the best in the market when it comes to one off's. If you want I have some photo's of Justin's car and the roll bar supplied by Jon.
Regards Nigel

I think Steve's aware of his design as the photo is referenced on a UK forum we both frequent (ddk-online.com)

I'm not sure what Steve is after, but for me this is too obtrusive for my purposes (though i'd be happy to admit a less obtrusive design would be less functional)

Steve,

I'm doing a little research on a build and often go to the 356 Registry site's Owner's Rides to look at pics for ideas. Also I use the regional US 356 Clubs, especially the Southern California 356 Club meet pictures. You will find a variety of roll bars on all years/types of speedsters. An example can be found at the 356 Registry Owner's Rides Pics... there is a 1958 Speedster owned by Phillips listed. Look through his pics, especially one of his white 58 lined up with a silver speeder. Both have the more classic rollbars found on some GTs and Carreras. These are a little tall for my taste, but they may give you an idea of what many originals look like if you are shooting for a true Retro Look.

Also, George B. and Brian H. have 2002 or 03 IM speedsters with rollbars that may be a starting point for ideas. Also Mike has one on Fern a classic IM that looks great. Paul has one on his VS that looks race ready, and Gordon's looks right to me. There was a Silver (VS or JPS) at the Knotts show this year that had a chrome single that I thought looked very clean. Flip through our registry and Knotts pics (under events in April) to scope them out.

I am thinking about one, but am still unsure what I will go for.. form over function probably. Good Luck in your project!

T C,

Thanks for pointing that out - the design looks interesting.

Steve,

I spoke with the new owners of Chesil and persuaded them to consider designing a rollbar if there is sufficient interest. They were going to go and give some thought to which pieces of existing steel in the subframe they could retro fit it to. Promising.

As an interesting aside they had the wreck of a rolled car at the factory and were pleased at how the subframe stood up to the impact - an impact that left one of the rear wheels 90 degrees out of place... and the fibreglass pretty smashed up. Driver was found crouching in the footwell...

With more HP on the way, I'm considering a roll bar much more seriously now.
