I have the stock 1776 dual carb motor in my VS speedster. It has been running great, but All of a sudden, it started running rough at idle (sometimes dies) and almost like on 3 cyl until you give it some throttle. It smooths out over 2500 rpm with throttle applied.
I replaced the plugs (gapped to 24). should they be higher like 27?
I replaced plug wires (except coil wire)

The above helped, but did not fix the problem.

I have not done anything else, so wondering if somthing came loose or ??? also, what should the points gap be? (17?) I have yet to look at the timing, but like I say, I did not change anything else.

Oh, one last thing, it has always popped a bit when cold in the 1800-2200 rpm range under mild acceration.

Thoughts/suggestions?

It does sound like a clogged idle jet if it is. start the car and let it idle if it will this get's a little tricky while it's running pull a plug wire off the cap on each cylinder one at a time if the jet is clogged the idle will not change that will be the clogged jet .The jet's that are working if you pull the wire's the idle will drop off right away and be careful sometime's you can get a little shock. The jet's are on the side of the carb you can look it on the world pac web site it will show you where there at ROLAND
Tracy, If you haven't already fixed the problem. It does sound like the idle jets and the bread tie works great. Here's the link I used to try to figure out where the idle jet was located. Not sure this is the right carb model, but it did get me in the right place... http://www.vw-resource.com/28carb.html#general

Good Luck!
Typically around .16 But, a smart person would buy a point eliminator and install that in your distributor and not have to worry about condensors, points, dwell etc. Petronix, Empi, and a few others make and sell a module that drops into your distributor in place of the points. You also remove the condensor and attach the red wire to the coil positive side and the black wire to the coil negative side. Once that's done, set your timing to a maximum of 28 degree's before top dead center at 3,000 RPM's lock it down and you're done.
