I have been told by a friend (who's info I trust) that if you machine the middle sections out of the intake manifolds to 1/2-1" from the bottom so both carbs are each feeding off one big plenum that the engine will idle properly off all 4 cylinders. It doesn't affect jetting or performance. I haven't had the opportunity to try it. Al

I've heard that one, too, waaaaaay back in the '60's, but like you I've never tried it.  Much safer to simply replace your singles with duals and rave on without making your manifolds a little weird.

On the gas mileage, Your mileage may vary, but typically with dual throat carbs we're seeing a range of 24mpg - 32mpg depending on the size of the engine and make of carbs used, with a "sweet spot" around 25 - 26.

I'm at about 26 mpg with dual Dell 40's on a 2110 stroker. That's what I got on a 180 mile trip recently. Mixed highway and city driving, about 60/40 mix.

... and that's just about right. Guys with single-throat carbs get in the teens. Guys with Webers or Dells who get that kind've mileage are just running pig-rich.

And yes, you'll hit on all 4 at idle with better carbs.
