I have been told that my 2.0 liter VW powered Speedster replica will always fire on only cylinders 2 and 4 not 1 and 3 when at idle. Is this normal and truthful.

What carbs are you using ? when I enlarged my 1600 to 1914 I had the same problem using dual single barrel carbs. I corrected this by going to dual 2 barrels (weber idf 40s) I was told that it was a vacuum issue- one cylinder pulling the fuel mix to itself.

Joel thanks for the response. I do have twin single barrel carbs on the car but the builder is sending me twin 2-barrel carbs to replace them. Thanks so much it makes me feel better knowing that this can solve the problem. BTW How many miles to gallon do you get from your car with the new carbs on it?
I have been told by a friend (who's info I trust) that if you machine the middle sections out of the intake manifolds to 1/2-1" from the bottom so both carbs are each feeding off one big plenum that the engine will idle properly off all 4 cylinders. It doesn't affect jetting or performance. I haven't had the opportunity to try it. Al
I've heard that one, too, waaaaaay back in the '60's, but like you I've never tried it. Much safer to simply replace your singles with duals and rave on without making your manifolds a little weird.
On the gas mileage, Your mileage may vary, but typically with dual throat carbs we're seeing a range of 24mpg - 32mpg depending on the size of the engine and make of carbs used, with a "sweet spot" around 25 - 26.
I'm at about 26 mpg with dual Dell 40's on a 2110 stroker. That's what I got on a 180 mile trip recently. Mixed highway and city driving, about 60/40 mix.

... and that's just about right. Guys with single-throat carbs get in the teens. Guys with Webers or Dells who get that kind've mileage are just running pig-rich.
And yes, you'll hit on all 4 at idle with better carbs.
verbieten-I get 20-22mpg.running at70-75mph and around the local streets combined . Of course i do a lot of adjusting -that's Webers. It doesn't smell rich. Tonight I replaced a carb to manifold gasket because it was leaking-when I sprayed starting fluid on the base of the right carb the engine sped up-left side seems ok.
Joel
Joel did you make that gasket out of left over dental paste
So us 1600cc guys are out of luck until a bigger engine, manifolds, headers and carbs OR grind out your intakes. What did I miss?
