Okay so here's the story, I bought this car in November, when I got it home it needed a fuel pump. I put the fuel pump on it and adjusted the valves and the car ran good (1641 36 Dells). I pulled the engine out of the car to re-wire the car, and put new engine tins on it. So while the engine was out I pulled the carbs and put all new engine tins on, new intake gaskets and put the carbs back on. I put the engine back in the car and replaced the exhaust as well with a high tuck quiet pack. I also replaced the ing. with a flame thrower pitronix. Once the wiring was complete tried to start the car and it ran like crap. Took it this past saturday down to a VW club that works on cars, they told me that the carbs are to big and I should trade for a set of 40mm Kadrons, so tonight we put the new carbs on and the car still runs like crap, the RPM's are all over the place. We put in the old 009 ing. and that didn't help. The new carbs are adjusted down, there should be no problem running them on my engine. Now has this happen to anyone else. The timing is dead on no matter what ign. we run. I plan on taking the carbs and intakes back off, checking the gaskets for possible air leaks and I also plan on double checking the valves.

Anything else I should be looking at?
Thanks

Will your engine run steadily at 3500 rpm or so? To determine if you have a vacuum leak, slightly restrict the air into your carbs with your hands (at this point your eng. will backfire, burn your hands and blame me). If you find the idle stabilizes a bit it's probably leaking. One carb at a time to locate the side. To further locate the problem-squirt a flammable liquid/gas around your carb base(s), shaft(s). When you hear your idle change--that's your problem area.
Disclaimer-----This is what I would do--Flames are bad, if the above makes you uncomfortable don't attempt.
When you are all done and you've fixed your issue. Make sure your
carbs are sync'd mechanically. Exactly the same position at idle, mid range and both carbs reach wide open position. This is not your
trouble but important.
Good luck.
Great advice from Bruce.

This SOUNDS much more dangerous than it really is, just use a little spray "Quick Start" (ether) and it'll be no big deal and it's a terrific way for tracking a leak at the manifold base or carb base sealing surface(s).

Brian; sorry to tell you this but your 36 Dells are WAY BETTER than the Kadrons. Now, don't misunderstand me; the Kads are good but not up to the standards of the Dells. To the person who told you you were over carbed; it's a lot of BS; Dell 36's go great with even stock motors so I'd venture to say your combo was perfect. See if you can install them back in and get the Dellorto Book from CB Performance; not a bad deal for $9.95.
Okay......get ready to laugh, I found the problem! There was a washer under the intake gasket, making a nice big air leak. I guess when I was rushing to put the engine back together I left the washer on when I replaced the gasket. I know, I'm a dumbass... The bright side is the car is running like a top...

I'm going to cut out of work early today to knock out the last couple of items before Saturday. I'm hoping if all goes well to run this thing Saturday for a few hours give it a good shake down and go from there. I'll get with Cory and see what we can do, but it looks like Carlise cruise will be my next big cruise. I'll be emailing you to arrange our meeting place and time.

At this point I'm needing to get the car out and run it. I just bought the car in Nov. last year and have been building it since. I have about two miles on it. I'll let everyone know what I'm doing once I get it out and get a few miles on it. I will more then likely be selling the Dells, but they do need to be rebuilt!
