oops - i didnt know you could add a topic with no title.

I'm in the finishing stages of my car (aren't we all?), and my attempt to do this remaining item has proven futile.

I wan to have some sort of finishing seal around the engine compartment lid. This is not the engine seal to keep hot air out of the engine compartment (engine tin).

I know real 356's came with little rubber/teflon buttons to stop rattles. my fiberglass engine compartment wasn't cut out that carefully and i didn't smooth it out before the paint - so i want to finish it off with some sort of black rubber seal

Does anyone know where can i order (online) an seal for the decklid / rear hood / trunk?

Precisely...http://www.mcmaster.com/#foam-seals/=c1r6hl
Just last week (in the afternoon) I ordered several pieces of their foam seals since I wasn't for sure exactly what I needed. The woman said thanks for your order it'll be there tomottow.
AND IT WAS AT MY DOOR BY 9:30 am. Mine came as a red rubber (and I thought I saw they had both red and black), so if you're particular (and I definitely see you are), you might want to inquire about color. In addition to selection, small quantities of this weatherstripping is available, not 100 foot rolls of the stuff. Whileon their site, browse around, they have plenty of other odd items you don't find in just any hardware store.
If you want to hide the edge, do a search on mcmaster.com for "edge-grip rubber seals", style 2 or 3 on catalog page 3438. It's a push-on style vs adhesive. Only concern might be clearance between the opening and the vertical sides of the hood since that seal style would reduce that gap.

You also have a really tight gap around your airfilters that might cause issues with this style. But you could easily grind the edges back more, some paint or other coating to seal the raw edge, and then hide the evidence with these seals without needing to repaint.
Nobody has mentioned the fact that those original little buttons were put there for a reason - ENGINE COOLING. The decklid and buttons were designed to let cool air enter the engine compartment around the deck lid and aid in engine cooling.

If you completely seal the rear deck lid, you are eliminating one important source of cooling air for your engine. Maybe your engine will run hot, maybe it won't. For me, I'll stick with what the Porsche folks designed - little buttons.
thanks guys. i just took it for a drive yesterday for the first time after major overhauls (a different new engine / brakes)

back on subject....

i take back all the good things i said about McMaster-Carr. They SUCK!
(Well, not really - i'm just not impressed.)

"Thank you for your order. Unfortunately, due to the ever increasing complexity of United States export regulations, McMaster-Carr will only process orders from a few long-established customers in Canada. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this causes you.

Thank you,

so....

any other ideas?
Mango, In my indecision last week when I ordered my weather stripping, I bought three different types and it appears that I will have ten feet of style #1 and 10 feet of style #3.
If you were to be thinking of using the D-style, I might have a solution for you. Cutting off the "tongue" of style #1 should give you a 1/2" x 1/2" D-shape. I'd send you a photo but it is over at my mechaanic's shop and I won't be back over there until the eariest tomorrow. Colorwise, it is of the orange/red color like the D-shaped stuff in this photo. Let me know what you think. It is of the Plain Back Silicone variety, no adhesive back.
