What a touching story.  When the annals of the SOC are written Jim ward and his Ruby will have an entire chapter.

Kudos to Allan for making that Speedster look as good as the day it was born---maybe even better. I wish In could have known Jim but he passed just as I was getting into the madness. He lived not too far from me and I know we would have caravanned together to Carlisle.

Congrats, Allan for taking a first prize at last weekend's car show in Eureka Springs, AR.  Alice and I enjoyed our time with you and Bobbi.

I'll never forget being "Mission Central" for a couple of his extended road trips.  We would talk for 45 minutes, me furiously writing notes and then getting them posted on here.  There was just a constant flow of Jim's thoughts of the day, and even the trivial took on a lot of significance because, well......it was JIM's trip and he was enjoying absolutely everything on it.

Thank you, Al, for taking such good care of Ruby and perpetuating her life with class.

After reading the article in Car Builder and Jim’s SOC biography plus threads I conclude this is the Jim I flew with in Vietnam. The following is additional circumstantial information that helped to make this decision.  In 1990 Del a pilot looked me up via internet.  In our phone conversation he asked if I keep in touch with the ‘Outcast’, unit name and radio call sign.  I told him no but the conversation we talked about Jim and he forwarded to me an e-mail he just received from Jim writing about his disease and treatments.  I sent Jim an e-mail but he never replied.  Interesting to see in the cc block on Jim’s e-mail the full name of Randy, somebody I knew in hi school so; send him a message to confirm it is the same person.  Randy and I re-bonded but didn’t talk about Jim.  Earlier this year Randy called to say he’ll be in the area to visit family and let’s have a family reunion.  Forty five years since I’ve seen him and his family.  I talked about Jim in Vietnam and he said they were very close friends and worked together in air traffic control for over 15 years.  I asked how he is doing.  He said Jim passed away about 10 years ago.  I have some pictures of Jim and I in Vietnam which prompts me to open the photo book and see their condition.  In addition, if they are recoverable I’ll scan and store as jpg.  If they are recoverable I will share with anybody interested.  I would very much appreciate sending me jpg images of Jim and his speedy.  My e-mail address is on the SOC profile.  Thanks.

Hello Dennis,

Just saw this thread, what an awesome story about Jim and his beautifulRuby IM. My CMC is also a replica of a '56 Speedster Carrera but not nearly as nice as Ruby.

I am also a Nam Vet and am always curious about other Vets in the SOC, what outfit were you and Jim in when you were in country? I was with the 173rd ABN Brigade in the Central Highlands on a base called LZ Uplift off hiway 1 in Binh Dinh Province. We were conducting interdiction missions on the two main Ho Chi Main trails coming from Laos and Cambodia into the Central Highlands. Do you know if  Jim's disease was related to Agent Orange? Anyway. always good to meet another Vet, Welcome Home Brother and of course...welcome to the Madness
