Wow! Finally got most the kinks worked out of the speedster (mechanical anyway) and took it for its first real shakedown run. Had to rebuild the carbs, clean the tank, put on a new pitcock, new gas lines, rebuild the dist and put on a new voltage regulator. Didn't think I was going to get it done before winter set in.

Man is this thing fun. Can't wait to get the oversized tires off of it so I can really see what it will do. The old tires are soft and way too big. The 912 Porsche engine is a torque monster compared to the 1835 VW I used to have and the 5 speed makes for nice cruising. I can also see a new steering box in the not so distant future.

For all you that have wondered about the 356/912 motor, I can say it does a fine job!

Ben. Congratulations! Is that 5 speed also out of the 912? It will be interesting to read your feedback when you get the tires on and push it some.

I'm up in Tulsa quite a bit and have a cousin in Springfield and an uncle teaching up at the U in Columbia. I have wanted to hook up with John H in TN with his new SAW Suby powered Cabrio but a little health thing made that hard to do this summer. That's over now though so... Maybe if you can get it ready in the Spring or Summer next year we all could meet up there by the Roaring River State Park and take some of those great highways along the MO/Arkansas border. OR maybe Eureka Springs. I was looking at the registry today and found a new VS owner and member in Yukon, a western burb about 30 SW of me. Gee... It's good to know there's owners out there within driving distance!!!!

Jim,
I here ya. I was beginning to wonder if you needed to live near one of the coasts to get together with others. I do see a few here through the midwest but seem to be pretty far out. THere is another guy here in Springfield, maybe two (haven't seen the other for a while) with speedsters. They don't come SOC though. Maybe I could round them up for a weekend thing.

The 5 speed is out of the 912 as well, or so I'm told. I did take a look at it and it is definatly Porsche but what model I am not sure. It looks to be a 915 but I could be wrong.

I will try to get together with the other guys here and see if they would be in for a run in the spring...

TC,

I have that Blue Cheer Albumn in good old vinyl. I played drums & so learning that opening tom-tom/bass-drum riff was one of the essentials. At the time it seemed about as important as getting the opening cowbell right on Mississippi Queen(if you know what I mean) Lol.

I have a decent collection of albums from that era... including all that Quicksilver did.

Jim,

About ten years ago I lived above a store front with three other guys. Often, at night when the store closed, we used to put on Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" full volume and fight each other! No weapons, but everything else was "legal." Never cracked my ribs, but they were separated several times and once punctured the right lung. When you're smashing three other guys that is ONE LONG SONG! When you're getting smashed by them it's ONE VERY LONG SONG!!

Every time I hear or even think about that opening drum riff I want to beat someone . . . aaahhh, memories.

These are the songs of our lives.
Hey T.C. are you refering to fight club? Anyway, feedback is one GREAT album. I saw rush 4 times over the summer, and they played a few songs from that album, including crossroads, which is one of my favorite from the album. If you don't have this album, I would defintely recommend picking it up. Great music for working on cars, but better to listen to when you are cruising!
David,

Yeah, it was a LOT like fight club, 'cept ten years ago, LONG before the film came out.

I was dating the girl who is now my wife and she never understood it, but somehow it became addictive and she let it go on 'til I took an elbow hit (wiper) to the orbital bone and it fractured. The scar is fresh in our wedding photos.

What an idiot . . .
