Just wanted to let you know Steve Lawning did sent me back part of my money for the down payment on my speedster! Many of you would be interested to know that he contacted me the VERY next day after ignoring my phone calls to let me know he was going to start sending me my down payment back. HE SENT $10,000 and then sent me a check for $4500 as part of my second down payment. After talking to him I realized he did not think he was in the wrong in any way and like most people like him justified all of his behaviors  I do know one think for sure. It does bother him what people write on this site. He acted like it did not make much difference to him but based on his comments it is obvious he thinks he handles things the right way. No apology, no nothing, Just got back all but $3000 I am just happy I am not dealing with him anymore!!! What a waste of time, energy, and money on my part!!!

The cycle continues.  Fortunately for Roger, he is closer to being made whole.  Of course, the new buyer, who actually put up the $10K down payment that was used to pay Roger, has his money used to pay off one more unsatisfied customer.  You couldn't make this kind of stuff up!

In the past 18 months, I have been contacted on this site by PM by 3 guys in the SAS queue, none of whom are  even listed as customers in the only unofficial queue that's available to SAS customers, i.e., a list put together by me and another customer in the queue.  That list shows 21 or 22 customers.  The unfortunate truth is that no one except Steve Lawing knows how many people have put up deposits, and he's not talking.

There may be 50 or 100 or more customers who have paid deposits and are waiting for delivery.  The guys who are numbers 1 & 2 on the list are now in their 9th year of waiting.  That's not a typo.  They joined the queue in Oct. & Nov. 2007.

Yes, it has been quit a negative experience. I just wish his word was good
and he knew how to run a business. Its ironic he has a good product by when
it comes to business sense its not there. He stated that most of the people
that complain about him on this site don't have a dog in the fight! In one
statement he said he didn't pay any attention to what was said on here but
he did call me the next day after not answering my emails or phone calls
for months. Never again will I try to order a custom built car plus I
should have researched his company and background record. BUYERS BEWARE!!!

Roger

One bad apple does not define the entire custom built car business.  There are plenty of great vendors such as IM and Beck that build great cars and also provide great customer service.  I talked to Steve before I bought my IM.  He almost had me drinking the Koolaid.  He's a great talker and sent me a contract for a fantastic car for a great price.  Told me the car would be delivered in a year.  Glad I had this site as a resource.  But I love my IM and I would also have Carey at Beck build me a car in a heartbeat.  Don't give up.  You'll miss a lot of fun.

Isn't that the definition of a Ponzi scheme?

True story....my late Mom, SSI deposits on the 1st of the month. She passed away on the 2nd of the month. On the 3rd of the month SS had already reversed the deposit !!

Yup - I was shocked at how fast they did that when my folks passed. I wish the gov was that efficient when it comes to dolling out welfare money to hypes, meth addicts, and alcoholics.

Goes like this:

1. It seems to be (correct me if I am wrong) that based on a legion of reports from SAS customers and perusal of the public record, that Mr. Lawing conducts his business in a manner that leaves many of his customers less than pleased (ironic understatement) with him and his company.

2. Some customers voice support for SAS , but it seems (again, correct me if I am wrong) that the satisfied are greatly outnumbered by the dissatisfied.

3. This site seems to be the preeminent place for replica speedster enthusiasts to gather and discuss various aspects of the hobby, making it a superior marketing venue for makers of these cars. The site has value to those wanting to sell to the relatively small number of people who are in the hobby or want to be in the hobby.

4. Many of us are what amounts to sustaining members of this site through our annual membership dues (Supporting Members).

5. Most, however, do not financially support the site, but participate in utilizing it for various reasons.

6. It takes money to keep this enterprise going.

7. SAS advertises on the site to the chagrin of many of us, both paying and non-paying users. It is reasonable to assume that Lawings investment in the advertising placement here is contributing to his ability to continue to operate his business as usual.

8. Perhaps an increase in the number of Supporting Members, those who pay for the site, could offset the revenue realized from SAS advertising on the site, making it unnecessary for the site to continue to act as an advertising platform for Lawing and SAS.

Just a thought.........carry on.

One Miata I'd like to drive is owned by a guy from Loveland, CO. It looks pretty much like any other mid-'90's blue Miata, has some custom rims on it, nice re-done leather interior....BUUUTT!...it is powered by a Grand National V-6 w/paddle shift 6-spd trans narrowed late model Corvette rearend, sits on a custom built tubular SS frame, Corvette steering and 4 wheel discs. I'd really like to meet up with the owner some day and really look over that car!

I've seen the guy on the road a couple of times and when he was leaving a couple events last summer...that Miata is damn fast. I followed him for awhile in the Cobra on a road full of a lot of twisties leaving an event in Ft Collins last summer and had a hard time staying with him. His car is like it is on rails, very little if any body lean and did I mention FAST!...wow!

Bob G said it pretty well:

Good websites aren't cheap to operate but the people who use them can be. If no one wants to see SAS advertise here then the members need to make sure it can sustain itself without advertising revenue.

Theron took a poll concerning SAS and advertising. A few people responded and the decision was to mark the ads as "Paid Advertisement".

If someone is considering buying a car from SAS and they Google anything about SAS they will find this site. If they come to this site and after reading everything on here they decide to still buy an SAS vehicle they should ask three questions:

When did you deliver your last car? How long did that person wait for their car? How many people are currently waiting for a car?

And if after asking those three questions they still give SAS their money then the age old adage of "A fool and his money are soon parted." holds true.

Government regulation of commercial speech is extremely limited.  Publishing entities, such as newspapers and websites, have the right to refuse to publish any content and/or advertising they wish.  The reasons for accepting or cancelling advertising can be unreasonable and/or capricious, and the government will usually not get involved.  A narrow exception can exist for facts that are not at issue here, such as Title 9 exclusions if the company accepts federal funds, or the reasons for accepting/rejecting are race-based.  Contracts between individuals and publishing companies can have state and federal implications, due to Interstate Commerce Clause concerns.  This has been black letter law for almost 50 years.

Fiji is one of the many countries in which a US-based legal education offers no advantage, since Fiji law evolved from the British occupation of almost 100 years, and is based on English common law, much like NZ, AU, etc.  US law has some relationship to British law, since English common law was the precedent for much of our civil law, but the systems have major differences.  Local barristers and solicitors still wear the black cloak and wig ala Rumpole of the Bailey.

My wife, daughter, and I sold everything in the US, and moved to Fiji almost 15 years ago.  We built a small eco-resort and dive shop from scratch.  We have now been in business for 10 years.
