Hi everyone. Have an appointment with the CA BAR smog place in a few weeks. Have a question for the people who have gone through this recently. This is a JPS Spyder with a 2332 VW Motor. I have ( to put on) a old style oil filler with drain tube, oil cap, duckbill PCV valve. Will be removing the breather tubing and breather. My valve covers have the breather line vents added to them. Question is, does the smog ref require that the vent line is just capped, or do they want to see a non tapped valve cover? Thanks

On my 2332 I had to do exactly what you have outlined.  On both of my vented valve covers, I stubbed the vent hoses about 1 or 1-1/2 inch off the valve cover and plugged the hose with a short bolt w/ screw clamp.  That was good enough, I guess; the inspector said nothing.

ALL enhanced (aftermarket) breathing apparatus MUST be removed.  Only the VW stock filler, cap, downtube and duckbill is allowed and is mandatory.  The vent port on the filler must be hose connected to the top of one of carb filter hats.

This was about 2 years ago.  It sounds like the story is the same, verbatim.

In my case, it seems like the only thing the ref wanted to see was the duckbill and the breather hose going to the carb.  Within no time he went inside and printed the sticker.  Altogether, maybe 15 minutes.

We drove directly from BAR to DMV, got plates and we were done.

Please elaborate. AFAIK, JPS only built coupes and Speedsters. If they did indeed "build" a Spyder, they may have finished somebody's kit. I'd like to know which manufacturer.
