I am off my turf here, so I hope you guys can shine some light on this. I have a CB performance 1776 engine that I add a larger p/c set making it an 1835. It has 40 idfs and dual port heads etc..
But ... I still feel the car is still wanting on this hilly roads around here. Its not a Speedster, but a Roadster - even so - more punch would be great.

Am I right in thinking I could get a Scat 2332 long bock, move over my dual port heads ,external oil cooler etc... add some 44 idfs and be done?

(Probably add a Bergman 911 fan and a megstart too.)

Or is this actually a can of worms I am considering?

As Ed said, the heads will probably limit the power output of anything much bigger than what you have now. If they have stock size (35x32 mm) valves they're probably very close to their limit now and increasing displacement, while giving kick*ss bottom end and lower midrange, will not make appreciably more upper/top end power and you'll find the engine runs out of breath 500 or 1,000 (depending on how big you actually go) rpm less than what the engine revs to now.

Your engine right now makes power to 5500? 6,000 rpm? For a 22-2300 cc engine to make power in that rpm range you'll be able to keep the camshaft (the cam tells the engine how high to spin), but the heads will have to flow substantially more, which will take bigger valves and some port work (slightly higher ratio rockers, 1 step bigger exhaust and maybe even bigger carbs may also be needed to complete the combo). Now you'll find that 40-50 (maybe even 60) hp increase (as well as the huge bottom end/lower midrange torque) you're looking for.

Power is in the heads- you can't put small heads on a bigger engine and expect bigger power!

Hope this helps. Al

Thanks Al. I assumed all that, but it is nice to have it so well explained. I am going to enjoy what I have, which is not bad.  :-)

(Honestly after doing all the math , etc... seems getting a turnkey engine from Pat is the costly way to go.)

Michael, I have heard both good and bad about Bergman's fan. But seems there were others making it too. It certainly looks nice when you open the engine lid. With a bigger engine - the idea I have been toying with - I'm not sure it would handle the cooling.
I saw at CB that Pat had built and engine with a 911 style fan - I wonder what he used?

If I was ordering an engine today, I'd get it from Pat no matter what.

Kit to assemble myself: Pat.

Long block: Pat.

Turn-key dyno'ed engine: Pat.

Bergmann is half good and half Steve Lawing. You never know which one(or which parts) you're going to get. Their 911 fan kit uses a Golf alternator which is really not designed to have a big fan on it. The real Porsche fan works great on a type1 though, in my 45000 miles of experience.
