Two parter here -

1. How do you go about mounting your seats to the floor? Currently I have bolts running through the seat to the sliders with steel tube spacers in between. And then a nylon washer/spacer between the bottom of the slider and the floor pan. Is there a bracket or something you folks use?

2. I know alot of you use 3M spray adhesive for carpet installs but I wondering if there is anything to the stuff than comes in a can and gets brushed on. It's said the brush on adhesive softens the carpet for easier fitting and contouring.

Any thoughts or input is, as always, appreciated.

I'm planning to put a 1 1/2" x 3/4" steel tube about 12" long under the forward end of the tracks and a 1 1/2" x 1/4" bar under the rear end.

I will use some kind of adhesive to stick these to the pan.

It seemed like a good idea to stiffen things up where the tracks attach. I can also level these pieces.

I am using Honda Civic tracks. These particular ones have feet that raise the tracks up about 1/2".
Mickey, I used contact cement reduced 50% with lacquer thinner. This mixture will soften the jute backing on the carpet and make it very limp so that it will go around any contour. When it dries, it stiffens up and stays in the shape desired. However, it you put on too much, it can soak through the carpet and turn it a little yellow. Experiment with some scraps first.
I used contact cement to put regular Velcro along the edges. That way you can remove carpet for cleaning/readjusting/drying. Slit carpet in inconspicious places to go around seat mounting posts/bolts. I slit mine from tunnel edge out to seat mounting bolts, that way you can easily remove carpet. I used H.D. Velcro at the corners and under pedals.
Thanks Guys.
Tom,
I'm on to a similar idea to keep the floor carpet in place. I bought magnetic tape. I was planning on running it around the border of the floor pieces and when it gets wet or needs cleaning I can easily remove it, the rest of the pieces dry pretty quick because the water just runs down instead of soaking it.
It remains to be seen if it'll work, but if not, I'll do the velcro.
mickey, check with a real auto parts store in your area or an autobody supply shop--They should have it(call before you drive).
It's great stuff. It too isn't cheap (I think $30/qt)but it has a heavier body and is easy to work with.

re seat mounts.....

I'm doing this right now !

Bought a pair of MX5 (Miata?) seats, I wanted head restraints and back adjustment.....

Building a subframe from 1" square stock to raise the seats by around 2" then bolting thro the subframe and pan to a 50x6 mm flat bar that runs all the way across the pan between the 2 seats using M12, 8.8 bolts.....

Pics to follow

Cheers
Gerry

Gerry,

Why do you want to raise the seats? I have a pan based IM with 914 seats that are bolted directly from the slider rails through the floor. And they are almost too high already. I have some Miata seats w/slider rails that I am about to swap out myself. It doesn't seem like I will need to raise them up at all. I will keep you posted on my progress and I definitely want to hear your progress and pics.

Do your seats have the slider rails? And did you get those great Miata MX-5 seats with adjustable headrests? They are very hard to get in the states.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

I put in the subframe to "level" the seats. I used some timber to play around with the mounting height and finally decided on 1 3/4" lift.....It also helped with the width of the seats and the backrest adjuster lever, without the hike the lever was behind the cill, (rocker?).

The seats have seperate head restraints and adjustable backrest.

Here in the UK we have a very severe test for "home built" cars, (was SVA, now IVA test). New test requires securely mounted seats and head restrraints.... along with many other requirements, (huge manual to comply with !), hence my full width, 6x50mm spreader under the pan..

Not yet worked out how to comply with external fuel filler ....
Gerry,

I'm going to start a new thread about Miata seat installation, hope you contribute your experiences also.

I just took off one of the 914 seats (passenger side)and I see why you are lifting it up. I dry fit the new seat and it snugs down into the depression in the pan between the sills. I might need to lift it up a bit to.

I love those adjustable headrests MX-5 seats, were they very expensive and hard to source? Would love to get a set of them.

Scott's pointing you in the right direction. I know Ive seen a thread about an exposed gas filler cap on the forum, keep searching. Similar to the Spyders.
If I find anything I will post it on this thread.

Dave

If you're looking for a "Monza" flap-cap example, see the link below. I am not at all knowledgeable in regards to the SVA/IVA specifications you must comply with in the UK or EU. I would get the most secure and compliant fuel set-up possible: cap, neck, fittings. Your UK specs will be the "driver" here. (I PERSONALLY would not install a functional Monza flap style cap for a daily-driver).

Scott,
Why wouldn't you install one? I'm curious because this is one of those "maybe someday" things for me. I was close to doing it but I didn't because I figure if and when I do I'll switch out the tank while doing it as I have one of the smaller 8-9 gl tanks currently.
It's for that reason I didn't order the hood straps from Dusty. Because when I drive everyday I fill up every couple days and didn't want to have to unbuckle every time I put gas in.
It's just my own preference regarding the typical flip-cap set-up. I'd go with a "Fuel-Safe" filler 1st in a non-crash-tested frame; again I state this is for a "daily driver"...here on California roads. I fully admit I'm safety conscious, maybe more so than most.
(Add-They do look really cool though. And it blows me away when I see the pro crews dump fuel into these new-gen (race) set-ups. Brute force poetry-in-motion!)
Hi Folks,

Re the Maita/MX5 Seats, I just finished my subframe and dressed the welds, I WILL get some pics, (promise :) )

I paid 80 sterling for my seats ($120), I joined an MX5 forum and placed an Ad....

Regarding the filler cap, the test is very specific, no filler in a luggage or passenger compartment.....Only needs to be external to pass the test, what happens thereafeter.......I'll be taking the car unpainted, no screen, '70's padded steering wheel and no trim. The less there is to test the better....

I may have to drill the hood, or scuttle and poke a filler through....
