Gerd, that one car really did have significant problems that went beyond what Tom was able to cope with by himself, and he lived too far away to efficiently handle them by sending the car back.

Tom and JPS had significant difficulties with each other, stemming from counting on each other to be like-minded people. Their mutual goal was to make the car right to the best of their abilities, but JPS isn't in business to lose money and Tom wanted a working automobile that functioned like a Porsche instead of a Volkswagen.

Other companies handle those types of difficulties differently, as do other customers. While there's plenty we could point fingers at on both sides, depending on perspectives and our own past experiences, let's please not do that.

Tom has moved on, JPS continues to make great-looking cars that hobbyists enjoy for what they are, and we don't need to crap all over this again.
I would have to agree with everything Cory just said, except the crapping part...but what some members might not remember is that Tom's coupe was like number 2 that JPS made, and you must expect issues on any prototype machinery....granted John may not be what we call a people person, but as I remember Tom busted his balls right out of the gate....
Gerd is a friend of John's and I'm glad to say also a friend of mine, I would hope he sticks it up for me when I need it...He's that kind of guy..

Tom, Gerd, let's not do this here. It isn't good for this hobby for owners to fight over a stack of rocks piled on a dead issue.

The car in question was, and is, the most beautiful fiberglass 356 replica I have ever seen. I would be proud to own it, even knowing it was a prototype which had teething problems. If I had not spent money equivalent to a modern Porsche on the toy I already have, I would have bought it from Tom in a heartbeat.

Rather than standing loudly at odds over what has clearly become a pride-based argument, please consider instead the health of the hobby as a whole. Be happy with what you drive now and the guys we get to cruise with -- as well as considerate of those who are considering joining us.
There is no argument. I wanted no argument or controversy.

I apologize for making a stupid attempt at a joke which obviously struck a raw nerve. I am very sorry.

For the record, I loved that car. It was my long-time dream car. I was very proud of it. As Cory says it was/is beautiful and the guy who bought it is a lucky man that got a bargain despite the (Fixed) issues. JPS did a GREAT job capturing my vision. Had economic situations not thrown my world into a whirlwind of change I would STILL have that beauty.

My situation, displeasure with my treatment, and desperate frustrations in finding help are all a matter of record and ANCIENT HISTORY. Clearly JPS Coupes are selling and the owners are happy. GREAT! I am happy they are and as such there has obviously been no long term ill effect.

That was my point. There has been NO LONG TERM ILL EFFECT.

I will always be indebted to my SOC friends who dropped everything and came to my aid when I needed it most. Your friendship, encouragement and expertise in my hour of need was a clear example of what is the best of this hobby and this group. Thanks again for your help and support.

This thread is a part of SOC, just like newbies asking about dash knobs. or owners comparing torque. This is a family of car guys and gals, and all families sometimes have arguments. I see no disrepute to the hobby. Not all of us get along, just like family reunions, eh? Owners feel strongly about their rides and often feel a sense of loyalty to their car's builder, their mechanic, suppliers, etc.

This is a minor bump in the long road of SOC, which has a rich history of helping members in their enjoyment of our cars. We don't need to hide anything. Don't delete it, just let it die a natural death.
Tom, well said.
I disagree with Jack that this thread should be deleted.
It shows how this site works, in a nutshell: miss-spoken/understood comments which are contested, collaborated, defended, supported, admonished, reflected, conceded, and, finally, put to rest.
If our government could be so well executed we would be fortunate.
This, gentlemen and ladies, is a great group of people and a most worthwhile place to visit.
