I just cant win.. with the title issues, and the amount of time ive spent on this car, my wife and I cant agree to disagree.

The car was completed in 1997 and registered in NY as a 1969 VW Convertible.
in 2002 it was driven from NY to FL
Now its in Lincoln, Nebraska with an OPEN TITLE from Florida. Nebraska wouldnt recognize the Florida title as a bug and i have been unable to get anywhere with the DMV.

Originally the car was wired by hand. I have since purchased the complete wiring harness from VS, but have not installed it yet.

Rebuilt dual Webers were proffesionally is why the speedster didnt run when i picked it up. It runs good, could still use a tune up or adjusting of timing, it seems to bog out at higher RPMS

The tach works but im pretty sure its not right. Speedometer also works but again i dont think its right.

I have the original manuals, receipts and a brand new wiring harness which is included. I also have a nice custom trailer with matching fuch wheels that was custom made for my speedster that obviously i will not need.

There is a gap of sorts on passenger side door, you can see the latch when door is closed. The rear deck lid doesnt close right ever since i removed it to rebuild the carbs. The front hood needs adjusted it sits up a little as well. I removed the gasket on the front hood because it wouldnt open at all because it was too tight. But i have a new one as well that is included.

The tail lights do not work and there is some wiring problems back there. The license plate light works but it looks something got hot and melted back there.. New Complete Vintage Speedster wiring harness included!

1915 cc motor with dual webers
bullet proof 4 speed tranny
front disc brakes
Real fuch rims

The paint is yellow and it has runs on almost every corner of the car. Im just trying to be honest. It looks great from 5 feet and still looks good close up but below almost every flare there are runs in the paint. Probably sandable instead of having it repainted. There are also a few stress cracks here and there but mostly small and not worth repairing in my humble opinion.

Man this sucks.. its a fun car and a head turner.. ive been driving it almost everyday when weather allows.

After buying the car, building trailer, paying for gas , hotel and friend to go with me to pick up the car.. Tune up including rebuilding the carbs i have $13500 in the car.. Is it worth that much? The odometer says i think 6800 and i beleive that is the proper mileage for the motor. There are all the receipts for the motor , chasis, ect.. in a folder that original owner gave me.

Car is located in Lincoln, Nebraska. I would consider delivery of the car with heathly non refundable down payment and a chance to get away from my wife for a few days.. :)

Im going to try it here for a few days then here come the dreaded EBAY!

You might want to try to fix the paint runs --- its easy with a "painter's nib file" and some 1000-1500 grit WD sand paper-- Eastwood has them. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1767&itemType=PRODUCT

Sounds like a reasonable price to me -- I'd sell just the Speedster for that and the trailer separate though.

Know all DMVs are different (but all a PITA!) - why didn't you just move the '69 VW Convertible FL title to your name as same vehicle identification. Even looking at it they wound't know a VW convertible from a Speedster. I'm sure they have the VW Karman Ghia registered as a VW -- so yours is the Reutter model!

Sounds like wife is jealous of the attention car is getting - that yellow is instant chick magnet.

Post some more pictures - engine & interior.
Cory,
As a point of comparison, I bought my last speedster for $8500. Build matches yours with the exception that it had a 1835.
It needed the paint color sanded and also needed wheels. Did not have body alignment issues or wiring issues.

I like to buy the ones in need of work so I watch ebay pretty close. Most flared CMC's with your description bring in the 8k ~11K range.

Not saying what yours is worth but give you something to go on.

The pictures below are of the one I gave 8500 for. It brought 10,500 after a color sand, tune-up and front discs. Also, it did not have any title issues.

THanks..

My car only has title issue in the state of nebraska :)

Which I think i might have solved today, awaiting another phone call.

If i could only get $10000 for mine i would just rather keep it. I will probably fix the rear tail lights so then there would be no wiring issue, i need to get up on a lift, it sucks trying to figure out those wires on the ground...

I also have original manual and all receipts. I bought it from original owner.

If you still have trouble with the Nebraska people, why not just title it in Iowa? I can help you get it done, one day, is all it should take. You can use my address if you like, and no one will ever really notice an Iowa car in Lincoln anyway, heck we have pool cars in Nebraska all of the time.
Steven,

Yeah thanks, thats actually my plan. My friend lives in Shenendoah and I think that is the route im going to take since nebraska is being a PITA

I guess they dont even inspect them, all they need is the title..

Then i will have to pay for Iowa plates.. Do you know how IOWA historical plates work? In nebraska if we can get a plate from the year of our car, like 1969 then we have it inspected by DMV as being a true 1969 plate and then we just pay $60 or $90 then its plated forever and we never have to plate it again..

Iowa got something like that?
They do not have that option. You can use your historical plates for driving to and from car specific events and parades only. I have a great plate that I had made for mine that is just like the ones in 56 but can rarely use it, they stop you fairly quickly if you try to run it daily.

You need to call ahead and set up an appointment with the person to title your car in Iowa. If it is already previously registered as a bug but has the VIN number of a CMC on the registration, it won't go through, because the computer will recognize that the VIN number you are trying to register is not a VW vin number. They instead will make you register it as a "specially constructed vehicle" and require an "inspection". If your previous title and registration are using the VW vin number then you don't have to do anything other then take in the paper work and transfer title and registration and let them call it a bug, but talk to a supervisor first and make them run the numbers and the information over the phone to see what they can and can't do to retitle the car.

If they require the inspection. They will look at the car to make sure that a VIN plate is secured to the car, and that the VIN plate number matches the one on the florida title and registration. Thats all they do for the "inspection". Nothing else really matters. But, you want to call ahead and talk to the actual person who will do the transfer of title and registration for you and make sure that is all they want. Some are less picky, and some are more, as with all government agencies it depends on the person. DON'T just talk to the registration office, they will tell you one thing and then when you get there they will tell you another, they are totally useless.
Did you check on the center tunnel hump back by the removeable plate to the shift coupler?

I think I have an old Virginia '69 VW title (might be '68 though) and the matching OEM VIN plate from the windshield frame. Striped rusty hulk went to local county metal recycling and is probably a KIA by now. I did have the plate from the front too but haven't seen it for awhile. Would that work for registering it? It wouldn't match the number stamped by the shifter coupler on the VW pan but most DMVs don't even know its there plus it would be covered by carpeting. I'll look this weekend - email me off the FORUM if interested.
It would have to be for the correct year. The vin number he needs is a VW convertible bug vin plate for that year. Since his paper work from the other state shows a vin number he can't change the vin number without the inspection. You will have to have them look at the car....see the correct matching vin number plate to the paper work you have from the previous state, and then they will issue you a new vin under the "specialty constructed vehicle vin numbers.

Basically, you can't unring the bell on this....your paper work must match the vin on the car to transfer the title and registration, and since your vin number is CMC it won't work in the Iowa system, it will catch it and not allow it to be titled this way. They will just confirm the car you have matches the paper work you have and reissue a new vin and new registration and title. They will let you call it whatever you want, but it will be registered as a "specially constructed vehicle in Iowa. Only certain special people in the Iowa system are allowed to do this, so make sure you get someone who can issue under the "specialty constructed vehicle". Once you get it set up and you have the right person, it literally is a 10 minute process. Hey it's better then standing in the regular line....you get an appointment and everything.
I have a bunch of cool offers from "agents" over seas, but no bids yet. I dont even have a reserve just the starting bid of $10000

I guess it looks like i might just work through some of the issues this winter and keep it.

Ive had almost 2500 views!

Looks like you guys wont be rid of me!

I was probably 10 of them myself at least..

I have 30 watchers, will be interested in to see what happens tonight.

Im kinda on the fence. If it sells great, if it doesnt it can go into storage for the winter and when i have time after the holidays i can fix stuff.. but im sure i will sell it unless i am unable to sell it before next summer..

what is funny, is ive left 3 message for this guy and it was his secretary that gave me an empathetic ear today.. The man i was suppose to talk to is out farming and should be back next week. She mentioned that they just finished training on on kit cars.. and asked me a few questions, once i told her its already titled and was registered in another state she said i just need to bring out there for him to inspect and it should be done..

Ill keep ya posted

ebay link this time is 250041702238

Note - You must be Honest Abe from Lincoln! You would scare me off with your ad's wording. IMHO it sounds like your selling off somone troubled car vice a good looking/running car for 1/2 of what individual separate parts would cost. The wheels are worth close to $1k alone. All the problems you list can be inexpensively fixed - door gap is classic CMC/FF problem addressed here several times (mine has from sitting in garage and never been driven!) List it here again in new ad with link to ebay - in case folks aren't willing to drill down to find its still for sale.
