My shifter feels like a stick in a box with nothing else in there. Put a fork in a tin can and rattle it around, thats near what it feels like and almost what it sounds like..

Ive got a cmc (as far as I know)... the mechanic i took it to said its the nicest he's seen. All the brakes turned out to be new and he said there is nearly nothing left of the vw pan... mostly new sheet and square beam construction. However, they left NO access hole for the shift linkage to be adjusted only a plate on top of the tunnel.

It shifts fine now, but is annoying.. I adjusted the plate after getting it back from the tech because he didnt know any better that you could then pull it into reverse from first without pushing down on the shifter.

the shifter spins 360+. nothing is there holding it from doing that also.

What do you suggest. I spend 758 bucks to have the whole car checked over for safety issues. rear ebrake clips were wrong? and broken so some noise was from the cables draggin? Also he replaced some studs on the wheels that were stripped. I had new wheel bearings installed, the gearbox lube changed, new plugs etc.. alround tune-up and carb adjustment. Choke was wired wrong too?. Now the car dies when cold- It never did before but i think it was running rich then, now i think its lean unless warm. whats that do you think? (he said there was something wrong with the carb, needed rejetted maybe and something might not be metering fuel correctly. or leaking it) I also found out the dist is compufire not points.

also there is still some sort of metal noise up front that i thought was brakes which is why i brought it into them in the first place. brakes good. noise still there, usually after swerving a bit or turning corners then straightening out... right front tire or something is rubbing? front is SUPER low to the ground, i think i will have some suspension geometry measurements etc done by a local race shop to make sure its all kosher. Its stiff and tight steering though, but a bit of a random shimmy from the wheel at some speeds.

Anyway, the shifter is the main problem i want to fix.

Im glad to pay for the full check up. 68 an hour is high but anybody else around would have been the same for this car i think. wheel bearings were 50 a set.

Nic,

Start by buying an EMPI "Hurst" style trigger shifter. You'll like it a lot. Even with a newly rebuilt transmition, the stock shifter is kind of... vague. Its the best $50 you'll spend on the car.

I'd recommend getting a copy of "Hot VWs" magazine, and taking a good look at the ads. There are MANY aftermarket parts houses with multi-page ads that adress some of the concerns you have. Any one of about 10 of them carry the shifter. I assume you've got drum brakes- almost everybody also has a reasonably priced front disc brake conversion kit that would likely solve a lot of your brake related complaints.

Good luck. I'm guessing you'll be doing more work on this car yourself as time goes on (or you aren't going to be able to afford it- $68/ hour? ouch!).
There are a couple of places that you can tighten up the shifter. First, check in that inspection hole back on the tunnel. You can replace that. The tougher one is up front, just behind where the shifter bolts down on the tunnel. It is the shift rod bushings. If those were not replace when it was built then it's a bit of a bear. It may also be that the shifter was never adjusted right to begin with. The SCAT shifter is nice, but nothing equals a Berg in price and function.
Berg is an awesome shifter. Original Hurst is an awesome shifter. Even the Hurst "Knock-off" is a nice shifter or a stocker. But they all have to be properly installed and adjusted. Correct placement, shift rod properly lubed up, no slop in the middle bushing, coupler in good shape, nose cone and hockey stick,......etc.
there are NO access holes. The tunnel is fab not vw.

Its going to be a chore. Im going give it a couple months before I dive onto fixing it up. I might even just wait until i go for the new engine and trans. Its as sloppy as it gets right now. But its also about 40 degrees outside now too so its really no longer a concern unfortunately. I will mess with it later. I hate living in Nebraska now more than ever. :)

Thanks though guys. I will take some serious pictures of this setup probably tomorrow. Im working on adding the car to my existing website. thanks for all your help
Sounds like to me that you have a broken shifter housing inside the tunnel....to repair that you have to reove the old one by finding the spot welds, grinding the away, and pulling it out. Its kinda a pain to do it, but its doable......no shifter replacement will fix it. also check the rear coupler from the trans to the shift linkage. if the screws arent tight it could slip as well....
