Very strange, my shift rod came out of the VW access hole, and wasn't close to hitting anything... In fact, I just reached in, grabbed it, and pulled it out. It was not too rusty. I did notice that it was cut and rewelded though... The bearings in that coupler were quite new and tight looking so I greased them and reused them. The shifting is so much better, but man... I've still got a rattle. My wife says it's in the dash, but I think I feel it in the tunnel. I definately hear the clutch cable slapping when it's off, and I'm pumping the clutch. So it's definaty come unwelded somewhere. I still think that's my rattle... But maybe not. It's almost like a pop rather than a rattle. Only on rough roads. Thanks guys, your a big help.
