Very strange, my shift rod came out of the VW access hole, and wasn't close to hitting anything... In fact, I just reached in, grabbed it, and pulled it out. It was not too rusty. I did notice that it was cut and rewelded though... The bearings in that coupler were quite new and tight looking so I greased them and reused them. The shifting is so much better, but man... I've still got a rattle. My wife says it's in the dash, but I think I feel it in the tunnel. I definately hear the clutch cable slapping when it's off, and I'm pumping the clutch. So it's definaty come unwelded somewhere. I still think that's my rattle... But maybe not. It's almost like a pop rather than a rattle. Only on rough roads. Thanks guys, your a big help. I'm enjoying something other than Mopars!
Look under the forward end of your gearbox for a gusset plate that runs from one side of the frame horns to the other, or for a strap that goes over the top of the gearbox.
Either item is intended to keep the transaxle from bucking on hard shifts, and can sometimes just be installed to keep the clutch from chattering over time.
If installed but broken, they might be your culprits.
