Shifter adjustment

Bought regular bug shifter to replace Hurst unit that came with car. Having trouble getting it dialed in. Any tricks or tips? Seems to really favor reverse and avoid first.

Put in in neutral. Pull it out. Reinstall keeping neutral where it wants to be. If you find neutral, you'll find the rest.

First also make sure the shift plate is installed correctly, then setting the shifter in the centered neutral position and after you secure the two 13mm head bolts, back them off a bit 1.5 turns or so) so as to be able to move just the stock shifter place (under shifter) with a large screwdriver forward - tighten (the shifter plate has elongated holes for this) and check for shifting function ....if still an issue, then aft a bit resecuring the two bolts and rechecking for all four and reverse shifter postions....If all this doesn't do the trick, then try putting it in first gear tightening the bolts and move the shifter to see if you have all the other positions.
