shifter help

i have a tee type shifter with the push buttom on the side for the reverse lock out. how can i remove the shifter tee handle from the shifter rod?
can it be reassembled?

It depends on the type (i.e., who made it).

Often, the handle has some sort of a small set-screw holding the handle to the stalk. Unscrew the set screw and the handle can be removed. Others have a threaded stalk and handle and they simply unscrew, Still others are a press-fit.

Whose shifter do you have?

once the set screw is removed the tee handle is held to the rod with some type of spring. can't see spring. bushing the bottom in pulls the reverse pin up at the bottom of the shifter rod. bug scat

If it's a similar mechanism to the shifter I have, you'll have to hold the spring loaded reverse lockout ring up towards the handle so you can disengage it from the piano wire that goes up through the center of the shaft to the button. You'll have to pull the whole shifter off to do this. Once the ring is held upwards (jam some needle nose pliers in there) pull the piano wire hook down out towards the bottom. Once the wire is unhooked from the ring, you can pull the handle off while guiding the wire through the center of the shaft. That wire hook likes to get held up on everything, so you may have to force it.
