My Speedster was buid on a 1970 VW doner car. I'd like to use an old Wolfsburg wood knob, and change the decal to a Porsche. Before I buy a used one, anyone know what shifter size was used in a VW in 1970, assuming that's what they used in the build?

Stock shifter was 12mm. Remember the old AMCO walnut ones that went for $14.95 new? There's a used shift pattern one for $55 and $65.
There's a shift pattern one on ebay now for $199!
Volkswagon Beetle™ after '68: 12mm x 1.50
Shift Knob Adapter Installation Instructions:
1. Determine correct Adapter and Jam Nut size.
2. Clean all threads prior to installation.
3. Thread Jam Nut onto shifter until at least 1/2" of threads are visible above Jam Nut.
4. Place flat washer on shifter above Jam Nut (for smaller shifter diameters only).
5. Thread Adapter onto shifter until it touches the Jam Nut (or flat washer).
6. Install Shift Knob onto Adapter until in becomes snug.
CAUTION - DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.
7. Turn knob counter-clockwise until graphics are in desired position.
8. Turn Jam Nut counter-clockwise until it is tight against bottom of Adapter.
Thanks for te help guys.
Not sure if you'd be interested in these but Mainely by Design makes pretty cool looking wood shifter knobs for Porsche:
I like the knobs, but they don't use the threads. It's not a bad alternative if I can't get the other to work.
Thanks,

Thanks,
I've got an email in to them about their connection process. I think they have an aluminum sleeve that uses an allen screw to connect to the shaft and the shifter knob is connected to the aluminum sleeve. I'll post their answer when I hear from them.
Just bought one of their knobs, just specify the threads you want and they will send the correct boss to mount their knobs. very nice piece.

Wiseguy is correct. I checked my email this morning and Bob Futterrer from Mainely, already returned my email and he said to just specify what shifter you're using and they will send the correct hardware.

You need to measure the size. Mine was smaller. I think 7mm
The Mainely page said it doesn't use a thread but a collet and I guess a screw or nut to secure. Wiseguy, how well does it fit?
The web page is probably aimed at "real" Porsches which have a larger chromed shift rod without threads at top. I recall on my 914 I cut the shifter off an inch or two and used a AMCO pleather crested shift knob with allen set screw (can't recall if one or two but it held).
FP, If you order the Mainely knob let me know how it works out
good luck
