loosen your shifter base housing and push it to the right about 1/8", then re-tighten and road test.
If that doesn't work, repeat process. You'll find the right gate eventually.
I finally took my tools with me and went for a drive took my printed Alan(thanks drclock) directions drove, losened, adjusted, tightened, drove, losened, adjusted, tightened etc. and about the 4th time seemed to hit the sweet spot torqued it down and it has been fine..... as the good doctor stated it takes a little time but well worth it.
Besides it was 82 here this weekend took a 400 mile day trip through the backwoods and beaches Saturday. It's oyster season on the coast so .......

Same here Richard - did the same thing this afternoon.
Turns out the Empi shifter I was using was not the issue, but the large washers under the bolts would not allow the the shifter to move like it should. Once I removed them I was able to get to the sweet spot as well.
Thanks again,
Dale

What if you can put in reverse without pulling the trigger? My shifter came with at's own plate, should I use the original instaead?
Also, do we need to grease the cup/ball?

If you can find reverse without the lockout engaged, it's usually because the shifter base is too far to the right. Try loosening it and moving it left in 1/8" increments until you must engage the lockout to find reverse. You should find that it doesn't take much base movement to make a difference.
Yes, grease the cup and ball with regular automotive grease. Molybdenum stuff is perfect.

No, I mean I get it into reverse without using the trigger. I also hit reverse while trying to shift to second.
10-4 Bill - What Gordon said - same thing I worked on last week. Loosen the bolts and nudge it to the left a bit - at some point you will need the trigger to get it into reverse then you know you are close. At that point move it from this point very small amounts till you get it just right. Drive around w/ a wrench ( mine was 13mm )_ and adjust /tighten/drive/stop/adjust/tighten/drive etc. till you get it right.
If you can't get it right bring it Sunday and we can play w/ it.
