Hi all,
Total newbie here. I am a Porsche nut and a friend told me of a 1955 Porsche that an older couple he knows of has. To make it short I went to look at it yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it. Turns out it's a Vintage 550. Year unknown so far but they bought it 2nd hand in 89 for 17k in CA. Vantage data plate has the # 020 stamped on it, I assume its the 20th car for its year of manuf.?? It has not been driven in 15 years and it looks like it. They keep it in their garage so its not too bad, but everything needs to be gone through. Clutch to the floor, shifter feels like crap. He said the last time he started it was 3 years ago and it ran like shit, he thought it was the "gaskets"! Was told the engine is a 1964, displ unknown. Couldn't be the 15 year old gas, could it?! So did I mention it is red, and not a great paint job at that. Red doesn't look that great on this car imho. Couple is super nice and I agreed to help them get it going but I think they want me to make them an offer, and I want to. Just don't have ANY idea what its worth. They seem real nice and I don't want to insult them with a lowball offer but was thinking to offer them 3500.00 for it and I take my chances.

Sooo, what is an older, slightly ratty, red Vintage worth??? Assuming I can get it running without spending a lot of $$$ I love the lines and the simple layout of the car. I've never driven one, but I assume that they handle quite well at 1300 lbs. po told me the front gets light at high speed. Is this common with these cars?

Any opinions, comments, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Drive fast, have fun

hallo Allan- you are the lucky guy of one in a million, finding that spyder, and if you get it for the amount you offered i give the double of that.since the car has not been running for many years,do not start it before you replace the old gasoline!!!!!starting a WV on gas with high residue old gas can easily seize the valve stems and lead to serious engine damage,[the engine will start and run,but after stopping it and leaving it to cool off-thats the moment that seases the stems!!!the real value of this cars are mostly in its body+accessories, all other stuff mechanical is easily found and inexpensive so you are way ahead-good luck with you,r buy,and keep us informed mary christmas manfred meissner
