Due to a recent death in the family I find myself needing $$. Question is, do I put the speedy in hock or sell it? You guys think it will bring $10K?

Fiberfab titled as 70 VW fastback.
1969 Porsche 912 drivetrain (1600 cc/5spd). Which now runs perfect. According to the last owner, there should be around 700mi. on a rebuild. Runs and drives like it. Smooth...

4 wheel disk brakes that are studded off of a 914.

No top but has a tonnue cover,

To be perfect, could use paint (not too bad now but not perfect), the front seats reupolstered (bottom pads are showing thier age), shifter rebuild and steering box is a little loose for my taste. Needs some chrome replaced buy I have most of that.

What do you guys think?

I'll swim against the current here. If you need to ask a bunch of guys you never met if you should keep it, maybe you've already decided in your mind to sell it.

The thing here is- these cars are replacable. It's not like any of us own a split window '63, or an original 356 Carerra- we have replica cars that can be replaced pretty easily (although not as inexpensively as what you have in your car). It's the beauty of a replica.

My advice? Forget about us. Ask yourself, "If I sell this, will I ever replace it?" and "Can I live with that, if the answer is no?". Are you going to see a pile of money just sitting there every time you look at the car? If you are going to regret keeping the car every time you drive it, then sell it. Your family has to come first.

A bit of advice on cars in your price range- $10K is the absolute floor. Your car will never be worth less than that- winter, spring, summer, fall, now, 10 years from now- ever. If you you want to keep the car, and can scratch by on some other funds, but still need the money in 6 months- it's still worth $10K.

I'd ask my wife, if I were you. She likely knows how much you REALLY like the car, better than you do.
Thanks for the advice guys. You are a great bunch. I do like this car but it is a toy. I would regret selling it at some level but I have had many that went on thier way due to unforseen circumstances. $10K is the price that makes it worth it to sell. I make some for my effort and after the required expenses are paid there would be enough left to buy something else.

This car has proven to be much more than I ever expected from a replica.

Anyone here interested at $10k?
Ben;
Like everyone else Id tell you to keep it, hopefully someone from this forum could get it and it be around. But if thats not the case, I think you can get better than 10k depending on how fast you need to sell it. You could try ebay and maybe get better than 10k but always taking in consideration the issues related to buyers and selling at ebay. There was an unassembled kit for about 8
I just read this thread and agree with the advice/thoughts Stan offered. Sell the car, take care of your family's needs and take the stress off. There will be a nice line up of cars waiting for you when you are ready to return to the hobby. Stay on the forum....

My 2 Cents.

Most of the time, whenever I read one of Stan's thoughtful threads, I'm reminded of an old "Calvin and Hobbs" cartoon where, after they've just received some really good advice from their mother, Calvin turns to Hobbs and says; "Mom's are so practical".

I feel the same way about Stan's advice...he's right on the mark, along with Jim and a few others.

Take care of your family - that's what comes first. The toys will find you later.

I have had great luck selling my old toys on eBay. Two of my vintage Land Rovers found new homes there at the price I wanted. At the range you are after, $10k or even $13k I think it would sell. Yes, many bargains like that great Spyder don't sell but many times ebay is about the bottom line or "cost of admission not the true bargain. A $35K car for $25K is less likely to sell than a $15K car at $11k. At $10K many people can play the game, at $25K you really have to wait for the righ guy no matter what the car is really worth.
