The key to any of the threaded knobs is getting the correct thread.
The 69 VW lever (Short lever) is 12mm X 1.5 thread.
If you buy a skull knob on ebay, you will need to drill and tap it or:
I added a threaded adapter to my skull knob.
I purchased a wood knob like ebay item #120174171406
I broke the wood off of the wood knob and salvaged the 12mm insert. Then I drilled the skull knob, and epoxied the insert into it.
If anyone has a source for 12mm X 1.5 thread adapters; it would make it easier.

The ball came from my '72 Nova (my second car ever). It's got a really nice weight to it, and it might be my imagination, but I think it makes for a smoother shift.
Compared to what it used to be, it looks a lot cleaner, too.
