I think I remember somebody one time posted a note that a single weber or dellorto will not fit in engine bay and allow the engine lid to close.

Any truth to that? If it is tight, I would guess it is the grill/vent that may hit. I have seen the stock Solex single carbs, but the stance is a bit lower where the single performance carb runs taller.

Maybe running stacks instead of an air filter?

Anyone have this setup?

A single two-throat carburetor is about the worst setup you can use for most air-cooled engines. Save your money and buy a dual carb kit that's properly sized/jetted for your engine.

Do not run consistently on the street without air filters or you will need an early engine rebuild.
A Weber progressive 2 bbl will fit with a minor modification of the inner liner of the deck lid. The air filter housing hits on the deck lid just before it is fully closed . You'll have to cut the opening in the undeside of the lid about 1/8" larger than the retangular airfilter. Use the 1-1/2" low profile air filter. The finished project, you'll be able to see the top of the chrome air cleaner through the deck lid grill but it looks agressive.
The Weber can be tricky to set up right, once you have dialed it in you're good to go and has an electric choke to boot! . I have fitted this Weber set up to a 1835 cc motor, it has been on the road for 6 years without a problem. Alan M
I agree with Alan. The trick is to get it set up correctly. Once it's set up it should be trouble free. You can also use a 90 degree tube and mount your air cleaner to one side. I did this to a dune buggy that I had years ago. I installed dual Kadrons and there was no room for the air cleaners. I used rubber 90 degree elbow and mounted the cleaners off to one side. Worked great. Also, check out your automotive parts stores for thin air cleaners, especially the ones with the rounded tops.
If you cut the inside of the engine lid and can see the cleaner through the grill, what happens when it rains? I had to cut a bit of the fiberglass on my engine lid to clear the 911 shroud. When it rained water dripped into the engine compartment.

A single Weber (usually a 48)is frequently used on the desert racers where class restrictions dictate engine mods. Look at the latest issues of Hot VW and Dune Buggies. There are usually feature articles of some racers in there. I know Ken Major Of Major Performance in Santee, CA builds engines for the SCORE racers. He emphasizes that they are torque motors rather than high horsepower motors. I don't really know if that means the cams are too big for street use or what. Ken did a great job of rebuilding my heads for larger valves (but I have dual Webers).
