Anyone know the size of the dash opening in an older(1984)IM for one of the gauges? It's a 914 gauge, and I thought I'd ask before I have to take the gauge out to check the exact diameter. I'm seriously thinking of installing a multi-gauge from Westach. This gauge needs a 3 3/8" hole and has a 3 7/8" outside bezel diameter. The single gauge has four smaller gauges in it. I'd like to run an oil temperature, fuel level and two head temperature gauges (one for #1 cylinder and one for #3 cylinder). The only probably I can see is that the new gauge will not match the other two gauges.
Check out the gauge at:

The 914 gauges are 4 1/16 approx. (The Tach is larger) There are little instrument light pods and poorly fitting back plates that jut out a bit, but the gauge pod itself is 4 1/16 as are the stock 356 gauge pods. The reproductions in some of the kits may be different. The dash hole will be a bit bigger since it also has to house the rubber gasket/collar that prevents vibration and damage.

Those gauges that you're looking at are exceptional! Many of the VW catalogues sell billet surrounds that will "adapt" a gauge to several hole sizes and they look quite nice, several styles and size combinations. Check with The Real Source or BugPack for starters.

Good luck,

TC
