I fought some steering demons for a while myself. Even after a complete alignment to recommended specs there was an odd looseness that I couldn't get rid of. After talking to some of the guys on the forum at Carlisle '07 I got a very long wrench and put all my strength into tightening the pinch bolt on the pittman arm. It only moved a flat or two, but the difference was amazing. I have recently redone that as they can loosen over time. I do believe it feels even better. It's worth a shot.
One thing to consider is the condition of your steering box. Wear there can make things skidish, for sure. When I first got my car,, it would hunt all over the place,,, and was just not happy going in a straight line. So I had the steering box changed, and also an alignment done. The difference was like night and day. Things were great for about a year,,, and then I began to sense that it was becoming looser again. So,, after some checking, I found (just like Lane),,, the pitman arm bolt had backed off a bit. I think I got about 3 flats of rotation (1/2 a turn),, and then life was good again !! tightening this bolt takes an 18" breaker bar,, and a 6 point socket,,, on my CMC at least. Check it out,,
