I just got my 2001 IM roadster delivered tonight which had a 7 hour trip from Ohio from PA in the rain, can you believe my luck the previous owner had it garaged since new and its first day with me rain all day anyway it was so disheartening when I oped the door to hear incredibly loud sloshing noises from the doors, both of them it's dry instead but sloshing sounds are coming from all around, actually might only be the doors but it sounds like from everywhere really I need help, are there plug in the doors I hope so?! I went beyond my budget for a roadster after having so many leaky speedsters and was really looking forward to not dealing with this but since it wasn't wet on the inside I guess it could be an easy fix, man the seats are low I was thinking roadster seats would be a little higher off the ground oh well I hope tomorrow is dry !!! thanks for any tips!!

Roadsters have roll up windows, right?

If so, it sounds like the rubber gaskets on the outside of the door window glass are either not there or not sealing against the glass, thereby letting water down past the window glass and into the doors.

The simple fix would be to drill one or two holes (one at each end) in the bottom underside of the doors to let any water out. If you're not up to drilling holes, then call or email Henry at IM

( TELEPHONE: 1-604-872-4747 / FACSIMILE: 1-604-877-1533 / EMAIL: info@intermeccanica.com)

and ask him what he would recommend to do (You'll find him to be a really nice, helpful guy). I would not be surprised to find that there are already drain holes in your doors, but they may be plugged with crud and all you must do is open them up. Either way, Henry will know and should be able to help.

Hi Jane--I'm glad to hear that you received your car! You should be better off with some water inside the doors than with water on the floors like I once had!

Don't be dishartened. Follow Gordon's advice and call Henry and go from there. Believe me, you will love that car once you get it sorted out and you certainly will get it up to speed. We all have issues to deal with when we fitst get our cars. Mine, with just 700 miles on it was so out of alignment with tires out of balancs, that I couldn't go over 40 MPH all the way home to Hot Springs, AR from Monroe, LA---about 250 miles . Took me 6 hours and now I can do it in under 3 hours at 75-80.

You'll be fine. Locate a local VW mechanic that knows bug engines
and buy the John Muir book.

Hang in there, girl!
its just surprising so many things, transmission fluid is bone dry but the oil if over full, water on the floors behind the seats, thumps into gear(it's automattic) by the way even with the correct amount of fluid in, it has been sitting for a few months but I can't imagine the fluid getting that low without a big leak. OH well lots to sort out but very ha[[y to have her for sure. I bought a unique storage idea called a "bubble" as it sits inside a blown up plasitc bubble that stays inflated by using a fan anxious to use they say it keeps the car as fresh as the day you put it in regardless of how long.
Jane---if your tranny fluid all leaked out, crawl under that car and take a look at the rear wheeks---inside the wheels and around the rear brakes. If there';s load of oil everywhere, you need new axle seals.

Ask me how I know---yuk. My trans fluid was low but not dangerously low. Lucky you found that issue.

Let us know what you see under there.

Hang in there girl---you'll ger 'er sorted out!
Jane as you know i built the 2 transmisons in my bug and speedster d check and see if the case seal between the automatic and the differencial was leaking you will have to pull the tranny and replace the main O-ring seal and a new pan gasket thats were the Audi 001s leak most commonly..after a long lifeThe 4 ..13mm bolts are bad to work lose that hold the assembly together Use Lock tight on the threads to fix that..

Id also replace the tourge converter seal if the car has been stored a long long time they tend to get egg shaped and hard and can also leak real bad. Im guessing thats were it got out

Fill it up and see where it leaks and fix only what you need to.. i lay a large peace of cardboard under the car when after i do and tranny service if it drips you'll a better chance of locating any leaks

TransStar of Texas offers the seals and gaskets. It can be a pain But I do love the fully automatic's they are a pleasure when it works right I have ONE warning Never toe a fully automatic trailer or roll back it..If it wont run on its own

The engine runs the tranny pump it can dammage the internals if you toe the car far..
hey Jack and Barry,

thanks, I'm going to have it looked at asap but let me know you something else I Picked it up today from being detailed and drove it back on the highway at 65 MPH and couldn't even talk to my friend it was so loud there is so much air infiltration its incredible I have to think there's something very wrong because although this is only my second roadster I don't remember the other one being this bad, I'm gong to post pictures but the only thing I can think of is that maybe the seller installed a new top and put it back not exactly right we did find at the end of the top folds where the door opens a black spacer bushing on each side was postioned wrong therefore not letting the top fold into the down position so maybe theres other areas like this needing to be sorted out the gap at the top of the windows are bad as well as where the door opens theres about an inch wide open for air to come flooding in also I can't figure out where the water came in to the floors behind each seat, lots to figures out major oil leak, it is 2 quarts overfull and NO trans fluid at all also thumps when putting it from drive to reverse to neutral etc, anyway really appreciate the input thanks so much

I would contact Alan Merkin and pay him what he asks to get that car in first class shape, which it appears to be far from today. That is a fine car and should be wind and water resuistant as well as not all that noisey.

I removed my carpets and painted on a thick layer of truck bed liner plus Dynamat everywhere and my car became a lot quieter----still I can't make a call on my cell phone going over 40.

It would be good to get that car straightened out over the winter so it will be ready for Carlisle next spring!

Good Luck! Jack
Id say the window glasses need adjusting at the very least.

I wish some one would come up with a softseal verson of the hard window rubbers I tried the factory stuff and converted mine to the GM early 80s type stuff that fixed it good. Thats one possablity..

I tape across the windshield with Gorilla tape for the winshield drips for now

I need a third latch but just dont want to drill and tap for the screws. that it requires (Very risky)

Find out what Henry is useing for window rubber, and keep us posted..

As far as the rear floors Id be willing to bet the area forward of the K-frame has not been sealed with expanding foam.. and the rear wheels are bringing it in.. That would be a quick fix the door rubbers may be a bit harder IF Allan has the time and is close to you Id be a askin
