Carl Berry and I seem to share the same philosophy that thrifty is good and build it yourself if you can. Each of us tried from time to time to get a hardtop but usually they were too expensive, the wrong top,  the cost of shipping was prohibitive or the seller insisted on cash and carry / no shipping.

This was a tough nut to crack but Carl is persistent. In late 2013 he found a seller in California with two tops that looked like they would fit. Dirt cheap too at less than $200 each I think it was. Somehow Carl talked him into fitting a two by four across inside the hardtops for support, plastic wrapping each separately and then shipping one to him in Connecticut and one for me to Upstate, NY that I picked up. I think the shipping was only about $130 each. Who would ship all the way across the USA for that price and not properly crated ? Non other than Greyhound Bus Lines.

It worked well and the fit is pretty good. Thanks again, Carl.

David,

Is this the only thread here for your re-build?  Since the big mash-up, I've been keen to follow your progress, but haven't found much to look at.  What I see here looks pretty nice -- gonna be like a new car when finished.  Have you run it yet?  How are the engine works??  And since you are averse to sun-screen, I think the hard top is going to be just the right thing for your spring-time jaunt down the coast.

Hope to see you in Carlisle in May,

Kelly

Ah, it wasn't that big a mash-up after all, Kelly. Most of it just buffed out. New right side mirror head and headlight lens, some chrome trim and that's really about it...plus the paint. :-)

I'm not doing a thread, only asking for a few rebuild tips along the way. A thread would become very disjointed for lack of regular content and would surely drift in many directions. Cheers....
