This AM before the heat wave started I put the little car on some ramps and changed out my heater hoses, sealed the open gaps at my engine tin with the big H foam for buses. While doing that I have some foil tape in my tool stash this is an HVAC alum foil tape that will hold up to 325 F which seems perfect for sealing the tin. http://www.hillas.com/Products/Metal_Foil_Tape__Tyco/Polyken_324_A_3__x_60Yd_SP_L.asp
It is even reflective and it sticks better than duct tape.
The old carb preheat holes were one of the big gaps and being right at the exhaust it must have pumped some heat into the upper engine bay. It is a weird shape and would be hard to block off with tin. So I went to the underside and stuck the foil tape on from below, that way if it falls off it will not get sucked into the doghouse fan.
Well after a test drive to the beach (OB)my impression and the thermo dip stick tells me it stays cooler longer and the big surprise is that it also reflected the sound down better. It was quieter in the cabin and I am very pleased with this side effect. I will go for a longer cruise Sun and see about the max temp but it did take much longer to get to 200f today and I usually run 205 to 210.
