Has anyone tried the phosphor based SMD lamps that claim to be brighter than H4 but nothing about LED comparisons? Did a search for any threads and didn't find any comments.

Never mind my stupid question. Found a key word "SMD" in the search tool and low and behold- info, that doesn't sound promising for the price.
Have a look a this site.... they compare H4 lighting to LED etc. Even Beam Pattern of H4 to LED. In my books, if you can handle an h4 with p43T or p45T base get a 60/100 and your way ahead on cost.
Thank you Ray.
I'm not really sure what conversions would be necessary for I the original H3 sealing lights that Kirk puts in his VS.
h3 sealing???
Another option to consider.
search SOC user reviews under the search field in the forum.... There are plenty of posted before/after pictures. Many on this forum have tried and are happy with them, including me. I have personally tried the vc2800 and recently the VC4000 my VS
i run the VC2800 on my VS, and ran a set on my restored '62 356C ( sold it earlier this year.)
I now run the VC4000 on our family nanny/ ski/climbing SUV- Honda Pilot. Going to order another set for my Q7.
nice lights, lifetime warranty/ replacement. Owner of the company has been on the site and is very helpful. Call or email him.... He will sell the light bulbs independently if you rather not purchase the complete light kit - bulb + 7" DOT glass headlamp.
Good luck.

SMD is just short for Surface Mount Device. It's just referring to the form factor of the LED. A phosphor type shines its light on a phosphorescent film which then glows to produce the light you see. It's a lot easier to generate white light with phosphor than it is to do it with an LED alone.
A halogen H4 bulb will give you about 1100-1600 lumens at 55 watts. A good LED headlight bulb can do 1x to 2x the lumens, using half the power, last 30 times longer, but also for at least 10 times the cost. Verify the lumens specs though, a good set of LED headlight bulbs are going to run $150-300 and have big heat sinks built in. Cheap ones that don't need heatsinks aren't going to put out enough light for headlight use, but would work fine as marker/taillight/DRLs.
The reason i gave the dynamo link is to show how someone has actually looked at the beam patterm with an led to replace an H4
And keep the integrity of a focused light to not kill the oncoming driver
in my books a good h4 euro light with good wiring is very cost effective and a 55 or 60/100watt makes a real nice light on high beam ... (At least 2000 lumen) of focused light .. Just saying
