I understand that CA issues a total of 500 special vehicle (smog exempt) certificates each year and that they're all gone on the 1st day. So, if you're not one of the 1st 500, you can't smog and register your car - have to wait for the next year and try again. Anyone have experience with smogging and registering a Beck Speedster in CA - assuming the engine is new and not rebuilt from a pre-'76 beetle.

Hi John,

You have been a member a long time, since 03. Did you have a speedster or just been wanting one?

I just got through with the SB100 at the start of this year and it is pretty easy. I bought an out of state Speedster in April of 08 and was able to keep it on the road with temp permits until the Jan 02 SB100 lotto. You just have to get up early and be at the DMV the first business day of the year. There are a lot of posts on this but it is not that hard to do it just takes time and jumping through a few hoops.
